Why do I feel guilty about everything?
When the guilt starts, name the stomach drop and ask one question: what did I actually do?
PATTERN: The Apology Loop / ARENA: SELF, BODY AND HEALTH
You had a good day, then guilt. You ate lunch, then guilt. You remembered something from school, fifteen years back, and felt it again in the stomach as if it were this morning.
This is The Apology Loop, the pattern where the sorry is a toll, handed over before anybody asks for it. Guilt is that toll when there is no one to hand it to. It stays in the body as a charge that never closes. Read the section on the body first. That is where the first move is.
One thing on this page outranks the rest of it. If the guilt has turned into a feeling that you should be punished, or that you should not be here, this page is not the place for it. Tell a person tonight.

You do not have to be sure it counts before you call or text.
What happens in my body when the guilt starts?
The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts. Here it is usually a drop in the stomach, then a heavy chest. Sometimes the throat closes a little. It comes before any thought about what you did.
Then the mind goes looking. It checks the last conversation, the last message, the last thing you ate or bought. It always finds something. The finding feels like the reason. It is not. It came after the drop.
[MECHANISM]
The stomach drop is the first step. It arrives three to seven seconds before the mind finds a reason to feel guilty.
To the body, guilt is a debt. The search for a cause, the replay and the urge to apologize are the payment.
Saying sorry, even to the wrong person, brings relief. That relief is the reward, and it is why the next wave comes sooner.
The window is the few seconds between the drop and the search. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement. It is short. It is enough to say one sentence.
How do I stop feeling guilty about everything?
Not by arguing with the guilt. You have argued with it for years and it still wins at three in the morning. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.
Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Here the behavior is the search, the replay and the sorry nobody needed. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Out loud, quietly:
Stomach dropped. I have done nothing wrong that I can name. I am not paying for this one.
Then ask one question: what did I actually do? If you can name it, and there is one thing to put right, do it once. If you cannot name it, go back to what you were doing.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
For one week, write each wave of guilt in one line: the time, and what the mind said you did.
At the end of the day, mark each line: real and fixable, real and past, or nothing I can name.
For real and fixable, do the one thing. For the other two, write filed next to it and close the book.
Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. A night where the replay ran for an hour still counts if you named the drop. You are filing, not grading.
Between moments, you can look at where this was learned, if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is also a complete answer. The practice does not need the history.
Why do I feel guilty about everything?
Because the guilt arrives first and the reason is found second. The pattern keeps a tab open in your name. Anything can be charged to it: a good meal, a short reply, a day off. The tab does not check whether a charge is fair.
That is why it feels intense and endless. It is not one guilt about one thing. It is one sequence that fires on whatever is in front of you.
Why do I feel guilty all the time?
Because the scan never switches off. When there is no clear event, the guilt does not go away. It drops to a low hum, a sense of being slightly in trouble with no charge named.
Feeling guilty all the time does not mean you are doing wrong all the time. It means the payment runs on a timer, not on events. Read your own week for the timing. You will find the drop comes before the reason, every time.
Why do I feel guilty even though I didn't do anything?
Because the guilt does not need an act. Someone in the room is unhappy, a message is late, a plan changes. The pattern supplies the fault and hands it to you before anyone has said a word.
Ask the one question: what did I actually do? If the honest answer is nothing, the guilt is a charge with no item on it. You do not have to pay it. Name the drop and leave it unpaid.
Why do some people feel guilty all the time?
This archive does not sort people into kinds. It describes a sequence: a stomach drop, a search for a fault, a sorry, a little relief. Anyone in whom that sequence runs often will feel guilty often.
If you are asking about yourself, the moves on this page are for you. If you are asking about someone close to you, notice what it costs you to watch it. You did not cause their pattern and you cannot run the moves for them.
Why do I feel guilty about things from years ago?
Because the pattern never closes a tab. A thing you said at fourteen is still listed. On a quiet night it comes up, and the stomach drops as if it happened today. The replay is the payment.
Try this once. Write the old thing down in one sentence. If there is a person you could still say one true sorry to, and it would help them, say it once. If not, write filed beside it. Paying again tonight does not reach anyone.
Why do I feel like I don't deserve to be let off the hook?
Because to the pattern, stopping the payment feels like getting away with something. Feeling bad is how you show yourself that you are not a bad person. Letting the guilt go feels like the wrong thing to do.
That is a verdict, and this is a record. A record can say what you did, and what you did about it. It does not hold a sentence. Name the drop, do the one thing you can, and close the entry.
Is this a conscience, or is this a pattern running?
A conscience points at something you did and goes quiet once you deal with it. The pattern points at anything, and it does not go quiet when you deal with it. It moves to the next thing.
Check the other rooms. Do you say sorry when nothing happened? Do you apologize to a chair you walked into? Then the guilt is the same loop the core file describes, running where no word comes out.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
THE FULL FILE
This page is one room. The Apology Loop is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

Why do I feel guilty for literally everything?
Because the guilt comes first and the reason is found after. The pattern keeps a tab open in your name and charges anything to it. The tab never checks whether the charge is fair.
What does it mean if I feel guilty all the time?
It means the guilt runs on a timer, not on events. It does not mean you are doing wrong all the time. Watch your own week: the stomach drop comes before the reason, every time.
Why do I feel guilty when I did nothing wrong?
Because the pattern supplies a fault before it checks the facts. Ask one question: what did I actually do? If the answer is nothing, the guilt is a charge with no item on it.
Why do I feel guilty after a good day?
Because a good day is something you have that might not be allowed. The pattern charges it to the tab. Name the drop and keep the good day.
Why do I keep thinking about things I did years ago?
Because the pattern never closes an entry. The replay is the payment. Write the old thing down once, do the one thing you still can, if any, and write filed beside it.
What is the body signal for guilt?
Usually a drop in the stomach, then a heavy chest. It is what you feel as the pattern starts, and it comes before any thought about what you did.
What should I say when the guilt starts?
Quietly: Stomach dropped. I have done nothing wrong that I can name. I am not paying for this one. Then ask what you actually did, and act only on the answer.
How do I know if the guilt is real?
Real guilt points at one thing you did and goes quiet once you deal with it. The pattern points at anything and moves to the next thing when you deal with it.
Why does letting go of guilt feel wrong?
Because feeling bad is how the pattern lets you feel like a good person. Stopping the payment feels like getting away with something. A record closes an entry. It does not hold a sentence.
Is this a clinical claim?
No. This archive makes no clinical claims and names nothing you have. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing. Clinical questions belong with a clinician.
THE ARCHIVES
The same drop may fire as a sorry at work, at home and in a shop. If you want to know whether The Apology Loop is your primary pattern, the one that runs most often, the assessment names it, and it costs nothing.
