Why do I sabotage my friendships?
After the next good time with a friend, wait one day before you decide anything about the friendship.
PATTERN: Success Sabotage / ARENA: FRIENDSHIP
The friendship was good, then you pulled. You said the sharp thing nobody needed. You found a list of reasons they were annoying. You cancelled the trip you had been looking forward to. Each move had a reason. Together they ended something you wanted to keep.
This is Success Sabotage in a friendship. It is the pattern that does not arrive as a wish to fail. It arrives as good judgment, at the moment things are going well. Read the section on timing first. Then use the script the next time a friendship feels close.
Why does it happen when the friendship is at its best?
Because that is when there is the most to lose. A new friend is low stakes. A close friend is not. Once the friendship is good enough to miss, the pattern starts to manage the risk of losing it.
It manages the risk by ending it first. An ending you cause is survivable. An ending that happens to you is not. So the pattern picks the fight, finds the flaw, or steps back, and the loss arrives with your name on it.
You are not ruining friendships because you do not care. You are ruining them at the exact point you started to.
What does the undoing look like?
It is rarely dramatic. It is a joke with an edge. It is keeping score of who texted last. It is a sudden feeling that this friend is too much, or too needy, or not really your kind of person.
It is a plan dropped with a good excuse. It is a decision to give the friendship some space, made in the week it felt closest. Each move can be explained. Look at when they happen, not why. The when is the record.
If your move is going quiet rather than acting, a different file may fit better. The page Why do I ghost my friends? covers that sequence.
What happens in my body when a friendship gets close?
The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts. Here it is often a tightening in the chest after a good evening together. A restless charge. Then a scan: what is wrong with this person, what is the catch.
[MECHANISM]
The scan is the first step. It arrives three to seven seconds before the sharp remark or the cancelled plan.
Then the thought: they are a lot, maybe we are not that close. That is the tightening, put into a sentence with a plan attached.
The relief when the friendship cools is the reward. That relief is why the next close friendship cools faster.
The window is the few seconds between the scan and the move. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement. The move is usually small, which is why it has to be caught by the body and not by the behavior.
How do I stop wrecking the friendships I want?
Not by promising to be a better friend. You have promised that before. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.
Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. The different action is one small move in the other direction.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Quietly, before you send or say the thing:
The scan is running. Nothing is wrong. I am not lowering this.
Then make one small move in the other direction. Keep the plan. Send the warm text instead of the sharp one.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
After the next good time with a friend, wait one day before deciding anything about the friendship.
Write down the flaw your mind found that evening. Read it again in a week.
Count the plans you kept that you wanted to cancel. Each one is a full repetition.
Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. A sharp word you said, and took back the next day, still counts.
Why do I sabotage my friendships?
Because closeness is a height, and the pattern reads height as a place to fall from. Your system is set for a certain level of good. A close friendship goes above it. So the pattern brings it back down with moves that each look reasonable. Look back at your last three ended friendships. Note the week each one started to cool. Then note what was going well that week.
Why do I ruin all my friendships?
All is the pattern's word, said at night, after the fact. It reads like a verdict about you. It is a record of a sequence. That is a verdict and this is a record. The same sequence has run more than once, so it feels like every time. It does not mean the next one has to go the same way. Start with the field assignment above, on the next close friendship you have.
Is this the pattern, or is the friendship really not right?
Some friendships are not good for you, and stepping back from those is not sabotage. The test is timing and repeatability, not how you feel about this one friend.
Does the doubt arrive when things are hard, or when they are best? Does it fire with every close friend, after the same kind of good evening? Then you are looking at a pattern. The file this page comes from describes the same scan at work, with money and in love.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
THE FULL FILE
This page is one room. Success Sabotage is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

Why do I self sabotage my friendships?
Because a close friendship is something you could lose. The pattern ends it first, with small reasonable moves, so the loss is one you caused and not one that happened to you.
Why do I push friends away when we get close?
Closeness goes above the level your system is set for. A scan starts, finds a flaw, and the pushing follows. The timing, at the best point, is the tell.
Why do I pick fights with my best friend?
A fight brings the friendship back down to a level the pattern knows. Notice when the fights happen. If they follow your best times together, that is the sequence.
Why do I suddenly find my friends annoying?
The scan looks for a catch and it always finds one. The annoyance is real, and it arrived on schedule. Check whether it shows up after a good evening.
What is the body signal here?
A tightening in the chest after a good time together, a restless charge, and a scan for what is wrong with the friend. It is what you feel as the pattern starts.
What should I do when I want to pull back from a friend?
Wait one day before deciding anything. Say: the scan is running, nothing is wrong. Then keep the next plan you have with them.
Is this the same as ghosting my friends?
Not quite. Ghosting is going quiet, which is a different pattern. This page is about acting: the sharp word, the found flaw, the early ending.
Can I repair a friendship I pushed away?
This page cannot say how another person will respond. You can say what happened, plainly, once. What you do is yours. What they do is theirs.
Do I have to know where this started?
No. You can look between moments if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer. The practice works without the history.
Is this a clinical claim?
No. This archive makes no clinical claims and names nothing you have. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing. Clinical questions belong with a clinician.
THE ARCHIVES
The same scan fires at work, with money and in a relationship. If you want to know whether this is your primary pattern, the assessment names it.
