Why do I feel sick when someone likes me?
Next time someone kind shows interest and your stomach turns, stay five more minutes before you decide.
PATTERN: Attraction to Harm / ARENA: SELF, BODY AND HEALTH
Someone kind told you they like you. Your stomach turned. You smiled, changed the topic, and spent the evening trying to find a reason it would never work.
This is Attraction to Harm, seen from the other side. Before you read on, write down the last time someone liked you and you felt sick, and what they had done. Attraction to Harm is a pull toward a kind of attention you learned early, felt as chemistry. The core file, Why am I attracted to people who hurt me?, covers the pull toward the wrong kind. This page covers what the body does when the right kind arrives.
Why does kind interest feel wrong?
Because the pull is recognition. It is not an assessment. If attention in your first house came and went, uncertain attention feels like love. Interest that is plain, clear and steady is not the shape the body knows. So the body flags it.
The flag is not a verdict on the person. It is the body saying this is not familiar. Not familiar is not the same as not safe. But in the moment they feel the same, and the stomach takes the message.
You are not sick of them. You are sick at something new.
Two edges come first. If the sick feeling is fear of this specific person, that is information, not a pattern to work against. And if you feel sick often, or at times when nobody is being kind to you, that is a question for a doctor. This page does not answer it.
What happens in my body when someone says they like me?
The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts. Here it is a drop or a turn in the stomach, often with a tight chest. Then an urge to leave the room, the chat or the date. It fires in the first seconds after the words land.
[MECHANISM]
The turn in the stomach is the first step. It arrives three to seven seconds before you pull back, joke it away or find the flaw.
Those seconds are the window, the space between the signal and the move away. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement.
The reward is relief. When you pull back, the strange feeling stops. That relief teaches the body that kind interest is something to escape.
The circuit is the sequence of steps. The cue, the first thing that sets it off, is their interest. Then the stomach, then the thought: something is off about them. Then the window. Then the behavior: the slow reply, the cancelled plan, the reason it would never work. Then relief, which teaches the body to run it again.
What do I do when the sick feeling comes?
Not argue with it. You cannot talk a stomach out of turning. You can choose what happens after it turns. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.
Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Quietly, when the feeling comes:
This is something new. Not familiar is not the same as not safe. I am not leaving yet.
Then stay in the conversation for five more minutes before you decide anything.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
For the next month, when someone kind shows interest and your stomach turns, wait one day before you pull back.
Write down what they actually did. Not what you felt. What they did.
Count the times you stayed five more minutes. Each one is a full repetition.
Between moments, you can look at where uncertain attention was learned, if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer. The practice does not need the history.
Why do I feel sick when someone likes me?
Because being liked plainly is not the shape your body learned. The familiar kind of attention was uncertain. Clear interest has no uncertainty in it, so the body flags it as strange and the stomach turns. The feeling is real. What it reports is not danger. It reports that this is new. Stay five more minutes and see what the feeling does.
Why do I feel sick when someone likes me back?
Because the chase ended. While they were unsure, the pull had something to do. When they say yes, the task is gone and the charge drops. The drop can feel like nausea or sudden coldness toward them. The page on the ick covers the turn that fires when they like you back. Here, notice the drop and stay a little longer before you decide.
Why do I feel sick when a guy likes me?
The pattern does not read men as a category. It reads the kind of attention. If he is clear, kind and keen, the body has little practice with that, and the stomach says so. Check the record, not the feeling. Write down what he has done. If the list is plain and decent, the sick feeling is about the newness, not him.
Why do I feel bad when someone likes me?
Bad can mean guilty, exposed or wrong. Guilty if you think you will let them down. Exposed if being seen feels like a risk. Wrong if the steady kind of interest is not the kind you know. All three end in the same move: pulling back. Name which one it is today. Then wait a day before you act on it.
Why do I feel sick when I like someone?
This is the other direction. When you like someone, the old waiting starts. Will they answer? Are they pulling away? The body has run that wait many times, and the stomach knows it well. If the sick feeling is strongest with the people who are unsure about you, that is the pull at work. Notice who it fires for.
Why do I feel sick when talking to someone romantically?
Because romantic talk is where the old shape is most likely to show up, or to be missing. Flirting, plans, the words I like you. Each one is a cue. The stomach is reading for the familiar kind of attention. Stay in the talk for five more minutes, then ask yourself one question: is this feeling danger, or is it newness?
Is this a warning, or is this a pattern running?
A warning is about a person. It comes with something they did, and it holds up when you write it down. The pattern is about a shape. It fires at kindness itself, and the list of what they did is plain.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
THE FULL FILE
This page is one room. Attraction to Harm is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

Why do I feel sick when someone likes me?
Because plain, steady interest is not the shape your body learned. The body flags the newness and the stomach turns. The feeling is real. What it reports is newness, not danger.
Does the sick feeling mean they are wrong for me?
Not on its own. Check the record. Write down what they actually did. If the list is plain and decent, the feeling is about the newness, not about them.
What if I really am afraid of them?
Then that is information, not a pattern to work against. Fear of one specific person, tied to something they did, is worth trusting.
Could this be a medical problem?
It could, and this page cannot tell. If you feel sick often, or when nobody is being kind to you, that is a question for a doctor. Ask it.
What is the body signal here?
Usually a drop or a turn in the stomach, often with a tight chest and an urge to leave. It fires in the first seconds after the words land.
What is the window?
The few seconds between the body signal and the behavior. Here the behavior is pulling back or finding a flaw. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a fixed number.
What do I say to myself when the feeling comes?
This is something new. Not familiar is not the same as not safe. I am not leaving yet. Then stay five more minutes before you decide anything.
Is this the ick?
It can overlap. The page on the ick covers the turn that fires when they like you back. This page reads the stomach that turns at kind interest itself.
Why am I only attracted to people who are unsure about me?
Because uncertain attention is the shape the body knows, and it reads as chemistry. Clear interest reads as nothing, or as wrong. That is the pull this archive files as Attraction to Harm.
Do I need to know where this came from?
No. Looking at where a pattern was learned is optional work between moments, never required. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer. The window works without a history.
Is this a clinical label?
No. This archive makes no clinical claims. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing. Clinical questions belong with a clinician.
THE ARCHIVES
The same pull picks partners, friends and jobs. If you want to know whether this is your primary pattern or one covering for another, the assessment names it.
