Why do I sabotage myself at work?
Next time good news lands at work, name the scan and do the next small thing on time.
PATTERN: Success Sabotage / ARENA: WORK AND CAREER
Work is finally going well for you. Your manager is pleased. The project is yours. And this week you missed a deadline you could have met in your sleep, and sent the reply in the tone you knew was wrong.
This is Success Sabotage at work. It is the pattern that lowers a good thing just as it starts to hold. It does not arrive as a wish to fail. It arrives as good judgment, at the wrong moment. Read the body section first. The moves come after it.
Why do I undo things at work right when they go well?
Because a good stretch at work is a height. The pattern reads a new height as exposed, and it works to bring it down. Not with one big mistake. With small ones.
The follow-up email you never send. The meeting you are five minutes late to, only the one that mattered. The stretch project you turn down because the timing is wrong. The one ally you pick a quarrel with. Each move is small enough to explain and large enough to cost you the altitude.
Watch when it happens. Rarely in the bad months. Usually after the praise, the good review, the hint of a promotion. Things going well is the cue, the first thing that sets it off.
You are not careless at work. You are careful about exactly the wrong thing: staying low enough not to fall.
Why does a good review make it harder?
Because praise makes the height visible. Before the review, the good work was private. After it, there is a record of you doing well, and a record can be taken back.
So the pattern takes it back first. A loss you cause yourself feels safer than one that might arrive from outside. If the slip is yours, at least you chose it. The pattern is not choosing failure over success. It is choosing a loss with your name on it.
What happens in my body when work starts going well?
The good news lands and something tightens instead of opening. A restless charge in the chest and upper stomach. A quick search for the catch. What is wrong with this? When does it get taken back?
[MECHANISM]
The scan is the first step. It arrives three to seven seconds before the first small undoing move.
Then the thought: I should be careful, this pace is not sustainable, I will reply tomorrow. That is the tightening turned into a plan.
The relief when the job feels smaller again is the reward. That relief is why the next undoing comes faster.
The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts, here the charge and the scan. The window is the few seconds between that signal and the first move. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement. It is where the work happens.
How do I stop sabotaging myself at work?
Not by caring more. Caring has never been the shortage. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.
Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. At work that means naming the scan when the good news lands. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. The different action is the next small thing, done on time.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
When the good news lands, quietly, to yourself:
The scan is running. Nothing is wrong. I am not lowering this.
Then send the next small thing now. One email. One file. Done on time.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
For two weeks, write down every piece of good news at work, one line each.
Beside each line, write what you did next. On time, late, or not at all.
Every on-time next step after good news is a full repetition. Count them.
Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. A week where the email still went late, and you named the scan, still counts.
Between moments, you can look at where this was learned, if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is also a complete answer. The practice does not need the history.
Why do I sabotage myself at work?
Because a job that goes well is a height, and this pattern lowers heights. It works through small moves: the late email, the missed follow-up, the turned-down project. Each has a reason. The timing gives it away. It comes after good news, not bad. Name the scan when the praise lands, then do the next small thing on time.
Why do I sabotage myself by not waking up on time for work?
Because sleeping through the alarm is the quietest undoing there is. It needs no decision. It happens to you, so it feels like bad luck rather than a move. Check the timing. Does it fall on the morning after good news, or before the meeting that mattered? Then put the alarm across the room, and stand up at the first sound.
If you are exhausted most days, or something has changed in your body, that is a question for a doctor. This page does not answer it.
Is this the job, or is this a pattern running?
Sometimes the job is wrong for you, and leaving is right. That is a real decision, made slowly, on a quiet day.
The pattern is different. It fires in every job at the same point, when things start going well. It comes with a reason ready. The reason changes from job to job. The timing does not.
Then check the other rooms. Does the same scan fire when a relationship gets good, or when the money adds up? Then work is not the cause. It is where the pattern is easiest to see. The file this page comes from describes the same sequence everywhere else.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
THE FULL FILE
This page is one room. Success Sabotage is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

Why do I sabotage myself at work?
Because a job going well is a height, and this pattern lowers heights. It works through small moves, each with a reason. It comes after good news, not bad.
Why do I sabotage my job when it is going well?
Things going well is the cue. A good review or a hint of promotion makes the height visible. The pattern lowers it first, so the loss has your name on it.
What does sabotage at work look like?
Small things. A follow-up never sent. Late to the one meeting that mattered. A stretch project turned down. A quarrel with the one ally. Each is easy to explain.
Why do I sleep through my alarm on important days?
It can be the quietest form of the pattern, because it feels like luck. Check whether it falls after good news. If you are exhausted most days, ask a doctor.
What is the body signal?
A tightening instead of a lift when good news lands, and a quick scan for the catch. It is what you feel as the pattern starts, a few seconds before the first undoing move.
What is the window?
The few seconds between the body signal and the first move. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement. The different action goes there.
What should I do when good news lands at work?
Say it quietly: the scan is running, nothing is wrong, I am not lowering this. Then do the next small thing on time. One email or one file.
Is this the same as quitting when a job goes well?
No. Leaving the job is a different sequence with its own file. This page is about staying and lowering the job from inside, one small undoing at a time.
What if the job really is wrong for me?
Then leaving may be right. Decide it slowly, on a quiet day. The pattern decides fast, just after good news, and it picks a new reason each time.
Is this a clinical claim?
No. This archive makes no clinical claims and names nothing you have. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing. Clinical questions belong with a clinician.
THE ARCHIVES
The same scan fires when a relationship gets good and when the money adds up. If you want to know whether this is your primary pattern, the one that runs most often, the assessment names it.
