Why do I stop taking care of myself?

PATTERN: The Disappearing Pattern  /  ARENA: SELF, BODY AND HEALTH

The letter is still on the side. It has been there long enough that you no longer see it when you walk past, and the appointment it refers to was for something you have not mentioned to anybody.

This is The Disappearing Pattern, aimed at the one relationship you cannot walk out of. The withdrawal that leaves a friendship without a conversation does the same thing here, and it is even quieter, because there is nobody on the other side to notice the silence.

Why do the basics go first?

Because they are the things nobody else is waiting on. Work gets done. The messages that other people are expecting get answered. What stops is the eating properly, the appointment, the walk, the medication, the sleep that was working.

That distribution is the finding. It is not a general collapse in functioning, which is what it feels like from inside. It is precisely targeted at the part of your life where you are the only person who would notice.

And it does not arrive as a decision. The routine that was working stopped without one, the way a friendship fades without an argument. There was no day you chose to stop. There was a day it did not happen, and then a week, and then it was gone.

Why do I avoid the doctor?

Because an appointment is somebody looking closely, and the appointment produces a fact. While the symptom stays unexamined it remains a thing you are managing. Examined, it becomes a thing with a name and a size, and there is no version of that which is not exposure.

The cancellation almost never happens weeks ahead. It happens forty minutes before, which is the tell: the sequence fires at proximity rather than at the booking.

The phrasings people arrive with are consistent, and the first is the searcher's own name for the whole thing:

    • “why do I stop taking care of myself when things get hard”
    • “why do I avoid going to the doctor”
    • “why do I cancel medical appointments at the last minute”
    • “why do I ignore a symptom for a year”

There is a paradox in this file that people rarely say out loud, and it is worth saying. A great many of the people running this look after everybody around them competently and have not seen a doctor in six years. The care is available. It is simply not routed inward.

What does this feel like in the body?

Usually a flatness rather than a tightness, which is what makes it so hard to catch. Not distress. A blank where the hunger should be, a nothing where tiredness would normally register, a fog that makes a phone call feel disproportionately impossible.

The specific version people report is the appointment card or the letter. A weight, or a small turn away, at the moment it comes into view. Then it gets moved to a different surface rather than actioned, which is the behavior, and it is so small it has never counted as one.

    [MECHANISM]

The marker here is a flatness or a turning away rather than an alarm. It arrives three to seven seconds before the avoidance does.

The thought that follows it, I will book it when work calms down, it is probably nothing, I will start again properly next month, is not the cause. It is the narration.

You are not constructing that story. You are receiving one.

One thing on this page outranks everything else on it. If you have a symptom that has been going on for months, or you have stopped a medication somebody prescribed you, that is a medical question and it is more urgent than any pattern.

Book the appointment or ring the surgery. If making the call is the part that has been impossible, ask one person to sit with you while you make it, or to make it for you. That is an ordinary thing to ask and it is what most people do.

If things have gone further than that, or if you are not sure you want to be here: in the United States, 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, call or text 988. Emergency services: 911. You do not need to be certain it counts to use them.

Why can't I start again when I know exactly what would help?

Because knowing what would help is not what has been missing, and it has never once been what was missing. You could write the plan. You have written the plan.

What is running is a withdrawal, and a withdrawal does not respond to a better plan any more than a friendship you stopped answering responds to a better draft. It responds to the marker being caught, which is a much smaller and much less impressive act than restarting.

There is also a second sequence stacked on this one and it is worth naming. The longer the gap, the more the return has to justify. A doctor's appointment after six months is routine. After six years it requires an account of six years, and that account does not exist, so the appointment does not get made.

How do I start looking after myself again?

Not with a restart. A restart is the same shape as the thing that has failed eleven times, and it needs conditions that do not currently exist. Insight does not rewire. Repetition does.

The window opens at the flatness, the moment the letter or the plan or the appointment comes into view, and it closes when the thing gets moved rather than done.

    [INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]

Out loud, quietly, when the flat turn-away arrives:

There it is. I am not deciding about this. I am doing the smallest piece of it now.

Then do a two-minute version immediately. Not the appointment, the phone number written down. Not the meal, one thing eaten standing up.

    [REWRITE FRAME]

Tell one person one true sentence about it this week. Not the whole account. One sentence.

This sequence runs on there being nobody on the other side to notice. A single witness changes the conditions it depends on more than any plan does.

You are not building the routine back. You are putting somebody in the room.

A failed interruption is still an interrupted sequence. Writing the number down and not ringing it counts as a repetition, and late catches are how most people start.

Is this laziness, or is this a pattern running?

The test is the distribution. Laziness does not sort by audience. Yours does: the things other people are waiting on get done, often to a high standard, and only the things with no witness stop.

That is not a failure of effort. It is a withdrawal with a very precise aim, and the aim is the part of your life where you are the only party to the arrangement.

One honest limit on this page. If the flatness is general rather than aimed, and it has been there most days for weeks, that is a question for a doctor rather than for a page about patterns, and the two are not in competition. Pattern work will still be here afterward.

This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.

    THE FULL FILE

This page is one room. The Disappearing Pattern is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

    Questions people ask about this

Why do I stop taking care of myself?

Because the withdrawal is aimed at the part of your life with no witness. Work gets done and messages get answered. What stops is the eating, the appointment, the walk, the medication, which are the things only you would notice.

Why do I avoid going to the doctor?

Because an appointment produces a fact. Unexamined, a symptom stays something you are managing. Examined, it becomes a thing with a name and a size, and the cancellation usually lands forty minutes before rather than weeks ahead.

Why do I cancel medical appointments at the last minute?

Because the sequence fires at proximity rather than at the booking. Making the appointment costs nothing at the time. The morning of is when the marker arrives, which is why the pattern looks like unreliability and is not.

Why do I ignore a symptom for a year?

Because the return cost compounds. A symptom raised in the first month is routine. Raised after a year it needs an account of the year, and that account does not exist, so the appointment keeps not being made. That is a reason to go now rather than a reason to wait.

What is the body signal here?

Usually a flatness rather than a tightness, which is why it is hard to catch. A blank where hunger should be, a fog that makes a phone call disproportionately impossible, or a small turn away when the letter comes into view.

Why do I look after everybody else and not myself?

Because the care is available and it is not routed inward. Other people are witnesses and witnesses keep things scheduled. Your own upkeep has no second party to it, which is exactly the condition this sequence needs.

    Is this depression?

This archive makes no clinical claims and does not diagnose anybody. What can be described is a sequence aimed at the unwitnessed parts of a life. If the flatness is general rather than aimed and has been there most days for weeks, that is a question for a doctor.

    Is this laziness?

Laziness does not sort by audience. Yours does: the things other people are waiting on get done, often well, and only the things with no witness stop. That is a withdrawal with a precise aim rather than a failure of effort.

How do I make an appointment I keep avoiding?

Do a two-minute version first: the number written down rather than the call made. Then ask one person to sit with you while you ring, or to ring for you. That is an ordinary thing to ask and it is what most people do.

How do I start again when everything has slipped?

Not with a restart, because a restart is the same shape as the thing that has failed before and it needs conditions that do not exist. One two-minute piece, done at the moment the flatness arrives, is the whole repetition.

Why does telling somebody help more than a plan?

Because this sequence runs on there being nobody on the other side to notice. A single witness changes the condition it depends on. One true sentence to one person does more than a better plan has ever done.

What if it has gone further than this page describes?

Then this is not the priority and the numbers in the safety section are. Pattern work is not a substitute for medical care or for a person in a room, and it will still be here afterward.
