Why do I attract people at work who are bad for me?
Next time the person you orbit asks for something, answer tomorrow, in writing.
PATTERN: Attraction to Harm / ARENA: WORK AND CAREER
You orbit one colleague more than anyone. They are sharp, funny and a little cruel about others. Their approval feels like sun. When it goes, you spend the week trying to earn it back.
This is Attraction to Harm at work. Before you read on, write down the names of the last two colleagues who cost you the most. Attraction to Harm is a pull toward a kind of attention you learned early, felt as chemistry. The core file, Why am I attracted to people who hurt me?, covers it in dating. Here it picks the person you stand next to at work.
Why does the difficult colleague feel like the interesting one?
Because the pull is recognition. It is not an assessment. Attention that comes and goes reads as alive to a body trained on it. The colleague who praises you on Monday and cuts you in Thursday's meeting keeps you scanning. Scanning feels like interest.
The steady colleague who answers your email and shares credit gives you no charge. The body files them as part of the furniture. You eat lunch with the one who keeps you guessing.
You are not unlucky in colleagues. You are choosing who to stand next to, fast, on a signal.
One thing on this page outranks the rest. If someone at work is harassing you, threatening you or treating you differently because of who you are, that is not a pattern question. It is a workplace and legal one.
In the United States:
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, eeoc.gov, 1-800-669-4000.
You can call about your own situation, at any hour, without having decided anything.
What am I actually recognising in them?
A shape, not a person. Warmth that has to be earned. Approval that vanishes without a reason. A mood in the room that you learn to read before you speak. If attention in your first house worked that way, this person feels like home, and home feels like chemistry.
That is why the pull survives every warning. A friend at work tells you to keep your distance. You nod, and you still bring them coffee. The warning is about the facts. The pull is about the feeling, and it fires first.
What happens in my body when they turn their attention on me?
The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts. Here it is usually a lift or a charge in the chest when they pick you out. A joke shared only with you. A message that starts with you are the only one who gets it.
[MECHANISM]
The charge in the chest is the first step. It arrives three to seven seconds before you say yes to their side project, their gossip or their late call.
Those seconds are the window, the space between the signal and the move toward them. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement.
The reward is being chosen by the person whose approval is hardest to get. It lands hardest after a cold week. That is what keeps the orbit in place.
The circuit is the sequence of steps. The cue, the first thing that sets it off, is their attention. Then the charge, then the thought: they trust me. Then the window. Then the behavior: the extra work, the defended mistake, the side you take. Then relief, which teaches the body to run it again.
How do I stop leaning toward them?
Not by deciding to keep them at arm's length. You have decided that, and you still stayed late for them. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.
Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Quietly, at the charge in the chest:
Chest up. That is familiar, not safe. I am not moving toward this yet.
Then say you will check your week, and answer their request tomorrow, in writing.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
For one month, every request from the person you orbit waits one working day. Answer in writing, not in the corridor.
Have lunch once a week with a colleague who gives you no charge at all. Notice the flatness and stay anyway.
Count the requests you answered the next day instead of on the spot. Each one is a repetition.
Between moments, you can look at where this shape of attention was learned, if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer. The practice does not need the history.
Why do I attract people at work who are bad for me?
Because you notice them first and lean in fastest. The one whose approval comes and goes gives you a charge. The steady people give you nothing, so you pass them by. The pattern makes the choice in the first week, before you know who takes credit and who keeps their word. Put a day between the charge and the yes.
If the whole workplace runs this way, that is a different question, and the file on choosing chaotic workplaces covers it.
Is this office politics, or is this a pattern running?
Office politics happens to you. The pattern picks. Check the last two names you wrote down. If they look different but the first month felt the same, warm then cold then warm, that is a shape you are choosing.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
THE FULL FILE
This page is one room. Attraction to Harm is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

Why do I attract people at work who are bad for me?
Because the pull reads approval that comes and goes as chemistry. You notice those people first and lean in fastest. The steady colleagues produce no charge, so they feel like nothing.
Why do I want the approval of the hardest person in the room?
Because approval that is hard to get feels like it means more. The cold weeks make the warm ones feel huge, and the body stores the warm ones.
Why do my steady colleagues feel boring?
Because nothing is firing. A colleague who keeps their word gives no spike and no relief. The body has little practice reading calm, so it reads absence.
What is the body signal for this pattern?
Usually a lift or a charge in the chest when they pick you out. It arrives three to seven seconds before you say yes to their request.
What is the window?
The few seconds between the body signal and the behavior. Here the behavior is the yes, the extra work or the side you take. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a fixed number.
What do I say to myself when I feel the pull?
Chest up. That is familiar, not safe. I am not moving toward this yet. Then say you will check your week and answer tomorrow, in writing.
What if someone at work is harassing me?
That is not a pattern question. It is a workplace and legal one. The routes near the top of this page are where to start.
Is this the same as choosing chaotic workplaces?
No. That file is the room, the job that feels electric. This page is the person you orbit inside any room. The two can run together.
Do I have to cut them off?
No. You put a day between their request and your yes. You answer in writing. The working relationship can stay. The orbit is what changes.
Do I need to know where this came from?
No. Looking at where a pattern was learned is optional work between moments, never required. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer. The window works without a history.
Is this a clinical label?
No. This archive makes no clinical claims. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing. Clinical questions belong with a clinician.
THE ARCHIVES
The same pull picks partners, friends and jobs. If you want to know whether this is your primary pattern or one covering for another, the assessment names it.
