Why do people dump their problems on me?
The next time someone starts to unload, say how much time you have first.
PATTERN: The Draining Bond / ARENA: SELF, BODY AND HEALTH
You said hello and they started talking. Forty minutes later you know about the landlord, the ex, the boss and the sister. They feel better. You go home carrying something heavy that was never yours.
This is The Draining Bond, the pattern where the reasoning lands on the same answer no matter what the numbers were. Here the answer is: keep listening. Read the section on the body first. Then try the script the next time someone starts to unload.
If someone has told you they are thinking about hurting themselves or about not being here, you can call for them or with them. You can also call for yourself, about what you are carrying. In the United States:
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.
Crisis Text Line. Text HOME to 741741, if a call is the part you cannot do.
Calling about somebody else is allowed. It does not break their trust to ask for help with something this size.
Why am I always the one who listens?
Because you always have room, and it shows. You ask the next question. You never change the topic. You never say: not tonight. Over years, that becomes a sign on the door. Open, any hour, no limit.
This is not a flaw in you, and it is not a scheme on their side. A person in trouble looks for the place where trouble is taken. You have been that place for a long time. Each time you took it, the sign got brighter.
You are not a magnet for problems. You are the one who never closes.
Why do I keep listening when I have nothing left?
Because the pattern has a cover story, and here it sounds like kindness. They need someone. I am good at this. It would be cold to cut them off. They have nobody else.
Every one of those may hold something true. That is why the story works. But watch the shape of it. A good week ends in keep listening. A terrible week ends in keep listening, with a reason attached. When the answer is fixed before the question is asked, the reasoning is not reasoning.
One kind of problem is never a listening job. If someone tells you they might hurt themselves, that is bigger than you, and it should not stay with you alone.
What happens in my body when someone starts to unload?
The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts. Here it is often a weight across the shoulders at the first sentence of the story. The breath sits high. Your own plans for the evening quietly leave the room.
[MECHANISM]
The weight is the first step. It arrives three to seven seconds before you settle in and ask the first follow-up question.
The cue, the first thing that sets it off, is an opening you know well: can I tell you something, or a long sigh.
Taking the story ends the weight for a moment, because you are now doing the job. That relief is the reward, and it keeps the door open.
The window is the few seconds between that weight and the first follow-up question. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement. It is enough time to name how much room you actually have.
How do I stop being the place every problem lands?
Not by becoming cold. You do not have to stop caring, and you do not have to stop listening. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.
Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Here the different action is one small limit, said at the start: how much time you have today.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Quietly, to yourself, at the first sentence of the story:
There is the weight. The math is starting. I am not solving it right now.
Out loud: I have fifteen minutes today. Then, at fifteen minutes, say so and go.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
For one week, write down each time someone brings you a problem.
Write who it was, how long it ran, and whether you said how much time you had.
Each time you name a limit at the start, count it. That is a full repetition.
Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. A week where you listened for an hour and noticed the weight afterward still counts. You are filing it, not grading it.
Some of them will push on the limit at first. That is information about the arrangement, not a reason to drop the limit. Keep it small, and keep it the same.
Between moments, you can look at where you learned to be the listener, if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is also a complete answer. The practice does not need the history.
Why do people dump their problems on me?
Because you take them, and you take them every time. You ask the next question. You never say you are tired. You never bring your own week into it. That makes you the safest place to put a problem down. The fix is not to stop caring. Say how much room you have before the story starts, and keep to it.
Why does everyone dump their problems on me?
When it is every friend, every coworker and half the family, the common part is you. That is not blame. It means the part you can change is in your hands. The same open door runs in every room. Pick one room this week. Name a limit there first, at the start of the story, and watch what changes.
Is this kindness, or is this a pattern running?
Kindness listens and can also stop. It can say: not tonight, I am tired. It does not come with a weight across the shoulders and a long drive home with somebody else's problem.
The pattern is different. It cannot stop. It takes every story, at any hour, whatever it costs. Check the other rooms. If the same open door runs in a relationship you cannot leave, the file this page comes from describes that version in full.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
THE FULL FILE
This page is one room. The Draining Bond is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

Is it my fault that people unload on me?
No. It is not your fault and it is not a scheme on their side. It is an arrangement that formed one story at a time.
What is the body signal here?
Often a weight across the shoulders at the first sentence of the story, and a breath that sits high. It is what you feel as the pattern starts.
Why do strangers tell me their problems?
Because the open door shows. You hold eye contact, you ask the next question, and you do not move the talk on. A stranger reads that in a minute.
How do I stop someone from dumping on me without being rude?
Name a limit at the start. I have fifteen minutes today. At fifteen minutes, say so and go. A limit said early is not rude.
Why do I feel guilty when I do not want to listen?
The cover story says a kind person always listens. The guilt arrives on schedule, the moment you want to stop. That timing is the pattern, not a verdict on you.
Why does nobody listen to my problems?
Because the arrangement runs one way, and you have never asked for a turn. Bring one small thing of your own to the next talk. See what happens.
Why am I so tired after listening?
Listening is work. You hold their story, track their mood and keep your own week back. The tiredness is the honest cost of that work.
What if someone tells me something really serious?
If they might hurt themselves, that is not a listening job. You can call a crisis line for them or with them. The routes are on this page.
Do I need to know where this started?
No. You can look between moments if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer. The practice works without the history.
Is this a clinical claim?
No. This archive makes no clinical claims and names nothing you have. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing. Clinical questions belong with a clinician.
THE ARCHIVES
The same open door runs with friends, at work and at home. If you want to know whether this is your primary pattern, the one that runs most often, the assessment names it.
