What do I say when my boss praises my work?
Next time your boss praises your work, say thank you and let the pause sit.
PATTERN: Compliment Deflection / ARENA: WORK AND CAREER
Your boss said the report was excellent. You said it was a team effort, that it ran late, that anyone could have done it. Next time, say thank you and stop. That is most of the answer.
This is Compliment Deflection at work. Compliment Deflection is the pattern where something good lands and the body treats it as exposure. The core file, Why can't I take a compliment?, covers it in every room. Here the praise comes from the person who also writes your review.
Why is it so hard to take praise from my boss?
Because a boss's praise is a judgment, and judgments can change. Taking it fully feels like raising the bar for next time. Shrinking it feels safer. If you say it was nothing, nothing can be taken back.
There is also the room. Praise in front of coworkers puts you in view of the whole room at once. The body reads that as exposure, and the fastest exit is to share the credit out or point at a flaw.
It was nothing is not humility. It is the sentence that ends the moment of being seen.
What happens in my body when my boss praises me?
The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts. Here it is usually heat in the face, a tight smile, eyes going to the floor.
[MECHANISM]
The cue, the first thing that sets it off, is the praise. Heat in the face follows.
A thought arrives fast: they are just being nice, or they have not seen the mistakes.
The window is the few seconds between the heat and the reply. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement.
The behavior is the shrink, the share-out or the change of subject. Relief follows. That relief is the reward.
The circuit is that whole sequence of steps. It runs the same way in a one-to-one, in an email, and in front of the team.
How do I stop shrinking it?
Not by deciding to feel proud. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.
Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Quietly, at the heat in the face:
Heat is up. This is exposure, not a mistake. Thank you, and nothing after it.
Then say the two words out loud and let the pause sit.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
Start in writing, where the heat is lower. The next kind email from your boss gets a reply of thank you, with nothing added.
No but, no it was nothing, no list of what went wrong.
Count how many you manage in a month. Each one is a full repetition.
The Stacks keeps a script page, Taking a compliment at work, with three versions of the reply for any colleague. This page is the boss in particular.
What do I say when my boss praises me?
Thank you. Then stop. If you want a second sentence, make it about the work, not about you: thank you, I enjoyed that one. Do not add that it was easy or late. The pause after thank you will feel long. It is not. Let your boss fill it.
What do I say when my boss compliments me?
The same. Thank you, that is good to hear. A compliment about you rather than the work, such as you handled that well, can feel more exposing. The reply does not change. You do not have to agree with it. You only have to show it arrived.
What do I say when my boss says good job?
Thanks, I appreciate that. Good job and great job are short, so the reply can be short too. The risk is filling the space with a qualifier: thanks, but it was mostly the team. If others helped, you can name them later, on purpose. Not as the first thing out of your mouth.
What do I say when my boss thanks me for my hard work?
Thank you for saying so. Being thanked for effort can pull out the urge to say it was no trouble. Notice that urge. If it was trouble, you do not have to pretend it was not. Thank you for noticing is honest, and it does not shrink anything.
What do I say when my boss appreciates my work?
Thank you, that means a lot. Appreciation often comes in a message or at the end of a meeting, when you can see it coming. That gives the heat time to build. Use the time. Feel the warmth in the face, name it, and have the two words ready before the sentence ends.
What do I say when my boss recognizes my work?
Thank you. I am glad it helped. Recognition in front of others is the hardest version, because the whole room turns to you. Keep your eyes up for one breath. Do not hand the credit to the person beside you on reflex. If you want to name them, do it after, as a choice.
What do I say when my boss congratulates me?
Thank you, I am really pleased. Congratulations usually mark a step: a promotion, a launch, a target met. Saying you are pleased is not bragging. It is a fact about how you feel. If the pattern starts scanning for what could go wrong next, notice the scan and stay with the pleased for one more breath.
Is this humility, or is this a pattern running?
Humility is a choice about how you describe your work. It does not come with heat in the face, and it does not fire the same way every time.
Check the other rooms. Does the same heat fire when a partner says you look good, or a parent says they are proud? Then this is not about work. It is the same reflex, and the core file describes it everywhere it runs.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
THE FULL FILE
This page is one room. Compliment Deflection is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

What do I say when my boss praises my work?
Thank you, and nothing after it. If you want a second sentence, make it about the work: I enjoyed that one. Do not shrink it, explain it or share it out on reflex.
Is saying thank you to my boss enough?
Yes. Thank you is a complete reply. The pause after it feels long and is not. Let your boss fill it.
Should I give credit to my team when my boss praises me?
If others helped, name them, on purpose and at the right time. Handing the credit away as your first words is the pattern, not generosity.
Is it bragging to say I am pleased?
No. Saying you are pleased is a fact about how you feel. Bragging is a claim made to be admired. Thank you, I am pleased makes no claim.
What do I say when my boss praises me in front of the team?
Thank you, with your eyes up for one breath. Recognition in a room is the hardest version. Keep the reply short and let the moment pass on its own.
What do I reply to a thank-you email from my boss?
Thank you for saying so. Then sign off. Start practising here, in writing, where the heat is lower.
What is the body signal here?
Usually heat in the face, a tight smile, eyes going to the floor. It arrives a few seconds before the shrink. That stretch is the window you work in.
What is the window?
The few seconds between the body signal and the deflection. Three to seven seconds is a working figure you train toward, not a fixed number.
Why do I say it was nothing?
Because being seen is exposure, and it was nothing ends the exposure fast. The relief is the reward, which is why the phrase comes faster each time.
Is this a clinical label?
No. This archive makes no clinical claims and names nothing you have. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing.
THE ARCHIVES
The same heat can fire at home, with friends and with a partner. If you want to know whether this is your primary pattern or one covering for another, the assessment names it.
