Is it normal to hate my roommate?
Next time you find their pan in the sink, leave it there and say one plain sentence tomorrow.
PATTERN: The Draining Bond / ARENA: SELF, BODY AND HEALTH
You hear the key and tense up. Your shoulders rise before the door is open. You stay in your room. Later you wash the pan they left, again, and hate them while you do it. Notice the weight before you judge the hate.
This is The Draining Bond at home. The Draining Bond is the pattern where the reasoning arrives at the same answer no matter what the numbers were. With a roommate the answer is: it is only until the lease ends, so say nothing and do it yourself.
What is the hate actually counting?
Often a bill. Every pan you washed that was not yours. Every night you lay awake through the noise. Every time you bought the soap, the bin bags, the toilet roll. Every no you did not say because it would make the flat tense. Each one was small. The total is not.
The reasoning keeps the bill open. It is not worth the fight. I have to live here. I do not want to be the difficult one. It is easier if I just do it. Every reason ends at the same place: say nothing, carry it. When the answer is fixed before the thinking starts, the thinking is not deciding anything.
Home has one cost work does not. You cannot leave it at the end of the day. So the bill grows in the one place that was meant to be rest. The hate is loud because there is nowhere to set it down.
This page cannot see your roommate, and it will not judge them. Some roommates are careless. Some have no idea a bill is running. Your own record is the part you can read.
You do not hate them because you are petty. You hate them because you have been running the house alone and calling it keeping the peace.
What happens in my body at home?
The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts. On this file the usual report is weight. Shoulders that rise and set. A heaviness in the chest when you hear them in the hall. It comes before you have seen what they left.
[MECHANISM]
The weight is the first step. It arrives three to seven seconds before you go quiet and do it yourself.
The cue, the first thing that sets it off, is small. A key in the lock. A pan in the sink. Music through the wall at midnight.
Doing it yourself ends the weight for a moment. That relief is the reward. The hate comes later, alone, and never reaches them.
The window is the few seconds between the weight and the silent clean-up. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement. It is enough time to leave the pan where it is.
What can I do instead of hating them?
Not by deciding to stop caring. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.
Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Here the usual response is silent carrying. The different action is one small limit, said out loud.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
When you see the pan and the shoulders rise, quietly:
There is the weight. The math is starting. I am not solving it right now.
Then leave it. Do not wash it tonight. Tomorrow, say one plain sentence about it.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
For one week, write down each thing you did for the flat that was not yours to do.
Pick one item from the list. Say one sentence about it: can you wash your pans before bed?
Count the times you left something instead of fixing it. Each one is a full repetition.
Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. Some nights you may wash the pan anyway. Leaving the next one still counts.
Between moments, you can look at where you learned that keeping the peace means carrying it, if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is also a complete answer. The practice does not need the history.
Is it normal to hate my roommate?
Normal is a count, and this archive does not count people. It reads sequences. Living with someone you did not choose puts every small habit in your space. A feeling is not a fault. Hate is information about what the flat is costing you. Ask what it is counting. If it is the work you do in silence, that has a window.
Check one more thing. Have you ever said, plainly, what bothers you? If the answer is no, the hate may be carrying a sentence that has never been spoken. Say it once before you decide anything else.
Is it normal to hate my college roommate?
A college roommate is often assigned, in one small room, for a fixed term. There is no door to close and no lease to break. So the reasoning says wait it out. Waiting it out in silence is how the bill grows. One plain sentence costs less than a year of it. If the room feels unsafe, tell the housing office or a residence adviser.
Is this the roommate, or is this a pattern running?
Sometimes it is the roommate. If they threaten you, take your things, or you are afraid in your own room, that is a safety question first. Tell the landlord, the housing office or someone outside the flat.
The pattern is different. It shows up in more than one room. Do you carry the same weight at work, with family, with a friend? Then home is where it is loudest, not where it lives. The core file on it is at /patterns/why-cant-i-leave-a-relationship-that-drains-me.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
THE FULL FILE
This page is one room. The Draining Bond is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

Does hating my roommate make me a bad person?
No. A feeling is not an act. The hate is a record of what living together has been costing you. What you do next is the part you control.
Why do I tense up when my roommate gets home?
That weight is the body signal. It arrives before you have seen anything, because the body already knows what it usually ends up carrying.
Why do I keep cleaning up after them?
Because cleaning ends the weight fast. That relief is the reward. The hate comes later and never reaches the person who left the mess.
How do I bring it up without a fight?
One item, one sentence, at a calm time. Can you wash your pans before bed? Not a list, and not in the middle of the mess.
What if I hate them and they have done nothing wrong?
That happens. Sharing a space makes small habits loud. Check your record. If you are carrying nothing extra, the hate may be about space, not about them.
Should I move out?
This page cannot say. Try one week of leaving things and saying one sentence first. Then decide with the body quiet.
What is the body signal here?
Often shoulders that rise and a heaviness in the chest when you hear them come in. It is what you feel as the pattern starts.
Why do I avoid my own kitchen?
Avoiding the room ends the weight for now. It also keeps the sentence unspoken, so the bill keeps growing.
What if I feel unsafe with my roommate?
Then it is a safety question, not a pattern question. Tell the landlord, the housing office or someone outside the flat.
Do I have to know where this comes from?
No. You can look between moments if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer. The practice works without the history.
Is this a clinical claim?
No. This archive makes no clinical claims and names nothing you have. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing. Clinical questions belong with a clinician.
THE ARCHIVES
The same weight may show up at work, with family and with friends. If you want to know whether this is your primary pattern, the one that runs most often, the assessment names it, and it costs nothing.
