Why do I feel like I don't deserve friends?
Next time a friend does something for you, say thank you and nothing after it.
PATTERN: Compliment Deflection / ARENA: FRIENDSHIP
A friend checked on you this week. You said you were fine, thanked them twice, and then thought: they could do better than me. The care did not land. It landed as a mistake they had not noticed yet. Read this page as a record of that thought, not a verdict on your worth.
This is Compliment Deflection in a friendship. The usual compliment is a sentence. In a friendship the compliment is the friend: the invite, the text, the time. Each one says you are worth it. The pattern sends that back the same way it sends back praise.
What happens in my body when a friend is kind to me?
Notice the moment a friend does something for you. They remember a date. They stay late to help. They say they missed you. Heat comes up the neck. The chest tightens. There is an urge to make it smaller, fast: you did not have to, it was nothing, I am fine.
[MECHANISM]
The heat in the face is the first step. It arrives three to seven seconds before the deflection.
Being cared for is being seen. The pattern treats close, kind attention as exposure, the same way it treats praise.
Waving the care off ends the exposure. The relief is the reward, and the reward is why the move repeats with every friend.
The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts: the heat and the tight chest. The window is the few seconds between that signal and the deflection. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement. Inside it, the care has arrived and you have not yet sent it back.
How do I stop pushing their kindness away?
Not by first deciding you deserve them. That decision can wait. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.
Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. When a friend shows up for you, name the heat as exposure. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Here the different action is to receive the care in plain words.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
When a friend does something for you, silently:
Heat is up. This is exposure, not a mistake. Thank you, and nothing after it.
Then say it once. Thank you. That meant a lot. Stop there. No you did not have to, no I owe you, no list of why you are not worth the trouble.
Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. Each time the care stays received, that is one repetition. Between moments, you can look at where you learned that care was a debt, if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is also a complete answer.
Why do I keep score with my friends?
Because a favor you have not paid back feels like praise you have not corrected. So you keep a tally. You pay back fast, and a little more than you got. That way nobody can say you took too much.
Watch what the tally does. It turns a friendship into a ledger with you always in debt. A friend gives because they want to. The tally reads it as a loan. Next time, let one favor go unpaid for a week and notice the heat.
Why do I think my friends are only being polite?
Because polite is safer than meant. If they are only being polite, nothing is being asked of you. If they mean it, you are seen, and being seen is the exposure.
So the pattern files every invite under manners. Notice that the filing happens without any new facts. Your friend did not say anything to suggest they were being polite. The verdict was written before they spoke.
Why do I feel like I don't deserve friends?
Because a friendship says you are worth someone's time, and the pattern cannot let that stand. The sentence I do not deserve them is the deflection, said to yourself. It does not come from a review of your record. It comes from the heat. Write down three things a friend has chosen to do for you. They chose. That is the record.
Is this deflection, or do I want to disappear?
They can look alike. If what you feel is a pull to vanish from the friendship once it gets close, that is a different file, The Disappearing Pattern. It fires when things go right, and it takes you out of the room.
This page is about the other move. You stay in the friendship. You just will not let it count. You show up, you help, and you send back every sign that they want you there.
Is this who I am, or is this a pattern running?
Test it across rooms. If the same heat comes when a manager praises your work, or a partner says you look good, it is not about your friends. It is the same move. The file this page comes from describes it in every room.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
THE FULL FILE
This page is one room. Compliment Deflection is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

Why do I think I don't deserve friends?
Because a friendship says you are worth the time, and the pattern sends that back. The thought is the deflection, said to yourself. It does not come from your record. It comes from the heat.
Why do I feel guilty when friends do things for me?
The care feels like a debt you did not earn. Guilt then asks you to pay it back fast, or to wave it off. Both end the exposure.
Why do I feel like a burden to my friends?
Being cared for puts you in view, and the pattern reads that as taking too much. Notice that your friend did not say you were a burden. The verdict came from the heat.
What is the body signal?
Heat in the face and a tight chest when a friend does something for you. It is what you feel as the pattern starts, a few seconds before you wave it off.
What do I say when a friend helps me?
Thank you. That meant a lot. Then stop. No you did not have to, no I owe you. Let the care stay received.
Why do I pay friends back right away?
An unpaid favor feels like praise you have not corrected. Paying back fast ends the exposure. Let one favor sit for a week and notice what the heat does.
Why don't I believe my friends like me?
Belief is not the test. The pattern files every sign of liking under manners, before any facts arrive. Read what your friends do, not what the pattern says about it.
Is this the same as ghosting my friends?
No. Ghosting is The Disappearing Pattern, the pull to vanish when things get close. This page is about staying and not letting the friendship count.
Do I need to know where this started?
No. Looking back between moments is optional. If you do not know where it started, that is a complete answer. The practice does not need the history.
Is this a clinical claim?
No. This archive makes no clinical claims and names nothing you have. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing. Clinical questions belong with a clinician.
THE ARCHIVES
The same move fires at work and with a partner, not only with friends. If you want to know whether this is your primary pattern, the one that runs most often, the assessment names it.
