Is it normal to hate my parents?
Next time the hate arrives, write down what came just before it, before you judge yourself for it.
PATTERN: The Draining Bond / ARENA: PARENTING AND FAMILY
Their name appears and your chest sinks. You answer anyway. You listen, you agree, you say you will come on Sunday. Then you put the phone down and feel a hate that scares you. Notice it before you judge it.
This is The Draining Bond in a family. The Draining Bond is the pattern where the reasoning arrives at the same answer no matter what the numbers were. With a parent the answer is: they are my parents, so I keep giving. The hate is what that answer costs.
One thing outranks the rest of this page. If you are under eighteen and the hate comes with being hit, threatened or shut out at home, that is not a pattern to work on. Tell an adult outside the family, or reach one of these.
If the hate has turned into thoughts of hurting yourself or someone in the house, use the first route below. In the United States:
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.
Crisis Text Line. Text HOME to 741741, if a call is the part you cannot do.
Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline. Call or text 1-800-422-4453, staffed around the clock. It is used by parents ringing about themselves, and you can ring for advice without making an allegation.
The National Domestic Violence Hotline. Call 1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788. Confidential, around the clock, and they talk about safety planning as well as leaving.
The domestic violence hotline covers family members and not only partners.
You can call or text just to ask whether your situation counts.
What is the hate actually recording?
Often a bill. Every call you took when you had nothing left. Every visit you dreaded and made. Every no you swallowed because they are your parents. Each one was small. The total is not.
The reasoning keeps the bill open. They did their best. They are getting older. I only have one mother. Some of that may be true. That is why it works. Watch where every reason ends. If it always ends at give more, the thinking is not deciding anything.
This page cannot see your parents, and it will not judge them. It can help you read your own record.
The hate does not cancel the love. It sits beside it, keeping count of what the love has cost.
What happens in my body around them?
The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts. On this file the usual report is weight. Heaviness across the shoulders, a sinking chest, a tired that sleep does not touch. It comes before the call is answered.
[MECHANISM]
The weight is the first step. It arrives three to seven seconds before the yes.
The cue, the first thing that sets it off, is small. A name on the screen. A tone in a voice. A question that starts with you never.
The yes ends the weight for now. That relief is the reward. The hate arrives later, alone, and does not reach the next call.
The window is the few seconds between the weight and the yes. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement. It is enough time to say let me think about it.
What can I do with the hate?
Not by deciding to stop feeling it. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.
Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Here the different action is one small limit.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
When the name appears and the chest sinks, quietly:
There is the weight. The math is starting. I am not solving it right now.
Then hold one small limit for today. A shorter call. A visit you do not promise yet.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
For two weeks, write down each time the hate arrives.
Next to it, write what came just before. A request, a comment, a call you did not want to take.
Count the small limits you held. Each one is a full repetition.
Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. Between moments, you can look at where this started, if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is also a complete answer.
Is it normal to hate my parents?
Normal is a count, and this archive does not count people. It reads sequences. What it can say is that a feeling is not an act. Hating a parent does not make you cruel. It tells you something in the bond is costing more than you can give. That is worth reading, not hiding.
Is it normal to hate your parents as an adult?
As an adult you have more choice and often more duty. The calls, the visits, the help with money or care. The old roles come back the moment you walk in. The bill gets longer, not shorter. You are allowed to reduce contact, or change its terms, without anybody's permission.
Is it normal to hate my mother?
If your mother is the parent you hear from most, she is also where the bill is longest. The hate is not a verdict on her, and not a verdict on you. Read when it comes. After which calls? After which kind of request? The answer tells you where a small limit would go.
Is it normal to not like my mother?
Liking and loving are different things. Liking is about how time together feels. You do not have to like time with her. You can still decide how much of it to spend. Dislike is not a fault. It becomes a cost when you keep saying yes to time you dread.
Is it normal to hate your mom sometimes?
Hate that comes and goes is easier to read than hate that stays. It points at moments. Write down the next three times it arrives, and what came just before. A comment. A request. A plan made for you. Those moments are where the window opens.
Is it normal to hate my father?
The same record applies. Read what comes before the hate. With a father it may be a tone, a silence, or a plan you were not asked about. If you feel afraid of him rather than tired of him, read the block at the top of this page first. Fear is a safety question before it is a pattern question.
Is it bad that I hate my parents?
A feeling is not a verdict on you. What you do with it is the part you control. Hate that stays silent turns into a bill. Hate that is read can turn into one small limit. The question is not whether you are allowed to feel it. It is what it is asking you to change.
Is it bad that I hate my mother?
No more than any feeling is bad. It may be loud because you are still giving a lot. If so, the guilt and the hate arrive together, which makes both feel bigger. Separate them. The guilt says you are wrong to feel it. The hate says something costs too much. Only one of them gives you useful information.
Is it bad that I hate my dad?
You are allowed to feel it. You are also allowed to keep it to yourself while you work out what it means. Write it down instead of saying it in a fight. Then read it later, when the weight has gone. The hate is a record. Records are for reading, not for punishing yourself with.
Is it normal to love your mom but not like her?
Yes, two records can run at once. Love is the bond. Liking is the time. You can love her and still find an hour with her draining. Holding both is not a contradiction you have to solve. It means the bond matters and the cost is real. Small limits protect both.
Is it normal to resent your mother?
Resentment is old hate with interest. It is usually built from things you never said. The no you swallowed. The visit you made when you had nothing left. Ignoring it does not shrink it. Stopping the bill from growing is the part you can do. Start with one small limit and say it plainly.
Is this my parents, or is this a pattern running?
Sometimes it is them. Some parents do real harm, and you owe no one an explanation for stepping back. If that is your house, the routes at the top of this page come first.
The pattern is different. It shows up in more than one room. Do you carry the same weight at work, with a friend, with a partner? Then home is where it is loudest, not where it lives. The core file on it is at /patterns/why-cant-i-leave-a-relationship-that-drains-me.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
THE FULL FILE
This page is one room. The Draining Bond is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

Does hating my parents make me a bad person?
No. A feeling is not an act. The hate is a record of what the bond has been costing you. What you do next is the part you control.
Why do I feel guilty for hating my parents?
Because the pattern treats your cost as something that must not count. The guilt arrives on schedule, whenever the cost is noticed.
Can I love my parents and hate them at the same time?
Yes. The love is the bond. The hate keeps count of what the bond costs. Both can be true on the same day.
Should I tell my parents I hate them?
Said in a fight, it rarely says what you mean. Write it down first. Then say the smaller, truer thing: I need this to change.
What is the body signal here?
Often a weight across the shoulders or a sinking chest when their name appears. It is what you feel as the pattern starts.
What is one small limit?
A shorter call. A visit not promised yet. A request answered tomorrow, not now. Small enough to hold today.
Is it okay to see my parents less?
Yes. You do not need anyone's permission to change how much time you spend with them.
What if I still live with my parents?
Then the limits are smaller, and that is fine. A closed door for an hour counts. If you are afraid at home, the routes at the top come first.
Why does the hate come back after every visit?
Because the visit added to the bill and nothing was said. The hate is the record catching up. Read what happened just before it.
Do I have to know where this started?
No. You can look between moments if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer. The practice works without the history.
Is this a clinical claim?
No. This archive makes no clinical claims and names nothing you have. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing. Clinical questions belong with a clinician.
THE ARCHIVES
The same weight may show up at work, with friends and with a partner. If you want to know whether this is your primary pattern, the one that runs most often, the assessment names it, and it costs nothing.
