Is it normal to hate my sibling?
Next time the weight comes around your brother or sister, keep one thing that is yours.
PATTERN: The Draining Bond / ARENA: PARENTING AND FAMILY
You hear their voice and go tight. You give way anyway. You let them have the last word, the bigger room, the better chair, the parent's attention. Then the hate arrives, and right behind it, the shame. Read this before you decide what the hate says about you.
This is The Draining Bond between siblings. The Draining Bond is the pattern where the reasoning arrives at the same answer no matter what the numbers were. With a brother or sister the answer is: family is family, so keep the peace.
One thing outranks the rest of this page. Some things are not a pattern to work on. A brother or sister hitting you, threatening you, or doing things you are told to keep secret is one of them. Tell an adult outside the family, or reach one of these.
If the hate has turned into thoughts of hurting yourself or them, use the second route below. In the United States:
Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline. Call or text 1-800-422-4453, staffed around the clock. It is used by parents ringing about themselves, and you can ring for advice without making an allegation.
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.
Crisis Text Line. Text HOME to 741741, if a call is the part you cannot do.
You can call or text just to ask whether what is happening counts.
What is the hate actually billing for?
Often a role. In some families one child is the one who gives way. The one who looks after the other. The one who keeps things calm for the parents. Every time you played that part, a small bill was added. The hate is the total.
The reasoning keeps the bill open. Be nice, they are your sister. He is only little. Do it for your mother. Some of that may be true. That is why it works. Watch where every reason ends. If it always ends at give way, the thinking is not deciding anything.
This page cannot see your sibling, and it will not judge them. It can help you read your own record.
You do not hate them because you are mean. You hate them because you have been paying for the peace, and nobody else noticed the cost.
What happens in my body around them?
The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts. On this file the usual report is weight. Shoulders that go heavy, a chest that sinks, a jaw that sets. It comes when you hear their voice in the next room.
[MECHANISM]
The weight is the first step. It arrives three to seven seconds before you give way.
The cue, the first thing that sets it off, is small. A door opening. A laugh you know. A parent saying just let them have it.
Giving way ends the weight for now. That relief is the reward. The hate comes later, alone, and does not change the next time.
The window is the few seconds between the weight and the giving way. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement. It is long enough to say no, that is mine.
What can I do with the hate?
Not by deciding to love them more. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.
Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Here the different action is one small limit.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
When the weight comes, quietly:
There is the weight. The math is starting. I am not solving it right now.
Then hold one small limit for today. Keep the thing that is yours. Leave the room instead of the fight.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
For two weeks, write down each time the hate arrives.
Next to it, write what came just before. What you gave up, and who asked you to.
Count the small limits you held. Each one is a full repetition.
Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. Between moments, you can look at where the role started, if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is also a complete answer.
Is it normal to hate my sister?
Normal is a count, and this archive does not count people. It reads sequences. What it can say is that a feeling is not an act. Hating your sister does not make you cruel. It tells you something between you is costing more than you can give. Read what it is counting before you hide it.
Is it normal to hate your older sister?
This page makes no claim about birth order. It can ask about the job. Was she put in charge of you? Is she the one held up as the example? Then the hate may be billing for years of being managed or compared. That is a record about the role, not a verdict on her or on you.
Is it normal to hate your younger sister?
Ask the same question about the job. Were you told to look after her? To give way because she is younger? Then the hate may be billing for a duty you never chose. You can love her and still hand that duty back, a little at a time, to the adults it belongs to.
Is it normal to not like my sister?
You do not have to like her. Liking is about how time together feels, and you did not choose her. Not liking someone is not a fault. It becomes a cost when you keep giving way to someone you do not like, because you were told you must.
Is it normal to hate my brother?
The same record applies. Read what comes just before the hate. A comment. A thing taken. A parent siding with him. If you feel afraid of him rather than tired of him, read the block at the top of this page first. Fear is a safety question before it is a pattern question.
Is it normal to hate your little brother?
A little brother can take your things, follow you, and get away with it. And you may be the one told to be patient. That is a lot to carry. The hate is real and you are allowed to feel it. Keep your own things in one place. Leave the room before the fight. Tell an adult when it is too much.
Is it normal to not like my brother?
Yes, you can not like him. You did not pick him. What matters is what the dislike costs you. If you are keeping the peace at your own expense, that is the part you can change. One small limit, held for one day, is enough to start.
Is it bad that I hate my sister?
A feeling is not a verdict on you. What you do with it is the part you control. The guilt and the hate often arrive together, which makes both feel bigger. Separate them. The guilt says you are wrong to feel it. The hate says something costs too much. Only one of them gives you useful information.
Is it bad that I hate my brother?
You are allowed to feel it. You are also allowed to keep it to yourself while you work out what it means. Write it down instead of shouting it. Read it later, when the weight has gone. The hate is a record. Records are for reading, not for punishing yourself with.
Is this my sibling, or is this a pattern running?
Sometimes it is them. Some siblings do real harm, and you owe no one a reason for keeping away. If that is your house, the routes at the top of this page come first.
The pattern is different. It shows up in more than one room. Do you give way the same way at school, at work, with a friend? Then home is where it is loudest, not where it lives. The core file on it is at /patterns/why-cant-i-leave-a-relationship-that-drains-me.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
THE FULL FILE
This page is one room. The Draining Bond is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

Does hating my sibling make me a bad person?
No. A feeling is not an act. The hate is a record of what the bond has been costing you. What you do next is the part you control.
Why do I feel guilty for hating my brother or sister?
Because you were told family is family. The pattern treats your cost as something that must not count, so the guilt arrives whenever you notice it.
Can I love my sibling and hate them at the same time?
Yes. The love is the bond. The hate keeps count of what the bond costs. Both can be true on the same day.
Why do my parents always take their side?
This page cannot see your parents. It can say what to do with the moment: name the weight, and keep one thing that is yours.
What is the body signal here?
Often heavy shoulders, a sinking chest or a set jaw when you hear their voice. It is what you feel as the pattern starts.
What is one small limit?
Keeping something that is yours. Leaving the room before a fight. Saying no, that is mine, once. Small enough to hold today.
What if we share a room?
Then the limits are smaller, and that is fine. One shelf that is only yours counts. If you are afraid in that room, the routes at the top come first.
Should I tell my sibling I hate them?
Said in a fight, it rarely says what you mean. Write it down first. Then say the smaller, truer thing: stop, that is mine.
Is it okay to see my sibling less as an adult?
Yes. You do not need anyone's permission to change how much time you spend with them.
Do I have to know where this started?
No. You can look between moments if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer. The practice works without the history.
Is this a clinical claim?
No. This archive makes no clinical claims and names nothing you have. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing. Clinical questions belong with a clinician.
THE ARCHIVES
The same weight may show up at school, at work and with friends. If you want to know whether this is your primary pattern, the one that runs most often, the assessment names it, and it costs nothing.
