What do I do when someone hurts me again and again?
If you are being hurt, frightened or controlled, read the box below first.
PATTERN: Attraction to Harm / ARENA: SELF, BODY AND HEALTH
If you are being hurt, start here. Read the box just below before anything else on this page. Then come back to the rest when you are safe to.
This is Attraction to Harm, in the repeat. Someone hurts you. Then they are kind, or sorry, or simply back. And something in you opens the door again, even though you saw what happened last time.
What if someone is hurting me right now?
If this is a relationship where you are being hurt, physically or otherwise, if you are frightened, or if someone controls where you go and who you see, this stops being a page about a behavioral sequence.
In the United States:
The National Domestic Violence Hotline. Call 1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788. Confidential, around the clock, and they talk about safety planning as well as leaving.
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.
Crisis Text Line. Text HOME to 741741, if a call is the part you cannot do.
Emergency services: 911.
You do not need to have decided anything to call those numbers, and you do not need to be certain that what is happening counts. That is what they are for.
Understanding the sequence does not make anybody safe. Getting to someone who can help you does. The rest of this page will still be here afterward.
Why do I keep letting them back in?
Because the return feels like relief, and relief is a strong reward. After the hurt comes a gap. Then they come back, and the gap closes, and the body counts that as the good part.
So the hurt and the return are not two separate events. They are one sequence. The worse the gap, the bigger the relief when it closes. That is why it can feel closest right after it was worst.
You are not choosing the hurt. You are choosing the relief that comes after it, and the two arrive together.
What happens in my body when they come back?
The common report is a lift or a charge in the chest when their name appears. It can feel like hope. It can feel like coming home. It arrives before any thought about what happened last time.
[MECHANISM]
The lift in the chest is the body signal, what you feel as the pattern starts.
The window is the few seconds between that lift and the reply. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement.
The reply brings relief. The relief is the reward, and it is why the next return pulls a little harder.
The lift is recognition. Your body has found a familiar shape. Familiar is not the same as safe.
How do I stop opening the door again?
Not by deciding you are done. You have decided that before, and the door still opened. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.
Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Here that means naming the lift when their name appears. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Out loud, quietly:
Chest lifted. That is recognition, not chemistry. I am not moving toward this yet.
Short form, for when the sentence will not fit: "Familiar, not safe."
If this is someone who has hurt you, the move is distance and one call to a person outside it, not contact.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
When the lift comes, put the phone face down and do not move toward them for seventy-two hours.
Tell one person outside it what happened last time, before the next return. A second person holds the record when your memory softens it.
Write down what happened, with the date, while it is clear. Read it when they come back.
Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. A time when the door opened, and you named the lift afterward, still counts. You are adding to the record, not failing a test.
Between moments, you can look at where you learned that hurt and closeness arrive together, if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is also a complete answer. The practice does not need the history.
What do I do when someone hurts me again and again?
First, if you are frightened or being harmed, use the box at the top. That comes before anything else. If you are not, work on the return, because the return is the half that is yours. Write down what happened. Tell one person. When their name appears, name the lift in your chest and put the phone face down for seventy-two hours.
What does it mean when someone hurts me over and over?
This page will not give a verdict about them. It can say what the repeat means on your side. Each return that is met with an open door teaches the sequence that it works. That is not your fault. It is how a reward holds a behavior in place. It also means the repeat has a part you can change.
Should I stop talking to someone who hurt me?
Nobody outside your life can decide that for you. You are allowed to. You do not need their agreement, a final talk, or a reason they accept. If you are afraid, distance and one call to a person outside it come first. If you are not, try a set period of no contact, and write down what the pull does while it lasts.
Is this love, or is this a pattern running?
Check the other rooms. Has this shape happened with someone else before: the hurt, the gap, the return that felt like rescue? Do steady people feel like nothing? Then this person is not the cause. They are where the pattern is easiest to see. The full file on Attraction to Harm describes the same pull at the start of things.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
THE FULL FILE
This page is one room. Attraction to Harm is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

What do I do when someone keeps hurting me?
If you are frightened or being harmed, use the box at the top first. If not, work on the return: write down what happened, tell one person, and put distance between you for seventy-two hours.
Why do I keep letting someone back in after they hurt me?
Because the return feels like relief, and relief is a strong reward. The hurt and the return arrive together, and the body counts the return as the good part.
Why does it feel closest right after it was worst?
The worse the gap, the bigger the relief when it closes. That relief is real. It is also what holds the sequence in place.
Should I stop talking to someone who hurt me?
Nobody outside your life can decide that, and you are allowed to. You do not need their agreement or a final talk. If you are afraid, distance and real help come first.
Is it my fault they keep hurting me?
No. What they do is theirs. The return is the only half of the sequence in your hands, and that is the half this page is about.
What is the body signal here?
A lift or a charge in the chest when their name appears. It can feel like hope. It is what you feel as the pattern starts, a few seconds before the reply.
Why do I forget how bad it was when they come back?
Because the relief is louder than the memory. Write down what happened, with the date, while it is clear, and read it when they return.
Do I need a final conversation before I stop talking to them?
No. A last talk is often the door opening again under another name. You can step back without one.
What if I already let them back in again?
Name the lift now, afterward. That still counts. Then start the seventy-two hours from here. You are adding to the record, not starting over.
Who can I talk to if I am being hurt?
The box at the top of this page lists people you can call or text in the United States, including the National Domestic Violence Hotline. You do not need to be certain it counts.
Is this a clinical claim?
No. This archive names nothing you have. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing. Clinical questions belong with a clinician.
THE ARCHIVES
The same pull runs at the start of things as well as in the repeat. If you want to know whether this is your primary pattern, the one that runs most often, the assessment names it.
