Why do I feel like everyone is lying to me?
The next time an answer sounds like a cover, ask one plain question once, and stop there.
PATTERN: The Testing Pattern / ARENA: SELF, BODY AND HEALTH
They told you it was all fine. You heard something else. A friend says she is busy. A partner says nothing happened. A coworker says the meeting moved. Each answer sounds like a cover, and you cannot say why.
This is The Testing Pattern, the pattern where you check for an answer that cannot settle the question. Here the check runs on every answer you are given. Read the section on the body first. Then try the short script near the end of this page.
Why does every answer sound like a cover?
Because the doubt arrives before the answer does. The check is already running when they open their mouth. So whatever they say gets read as an input to the check, not as an answer. Fine becomes too quick. A long reply becomes too careful. A short one becomes hiding.
No answer can pass a check like that. That is the design. An answer that settled it would end the check, and the check exists to keep you ready. Ready for the moment someone leaves, lets you down, or turns out to be someone else.
You are not waiting to catch them lying. You are waiting for the moment you were right to doubt them.
What happens in my body when someone gives me an answer?
The heart moves first. It picks up while they are still talking, fast and hard. There is a restless charge that wants to do something, so you ask a follow-up, check a story, or watch their face. The doubting thought comes after the beat.
[MECHANISM]
The fast heart is the first step. It arrives three to seven seconds before the behavior: the follow-up question, the check, the cold reply.
The check brings a moment of relief, because you did something. That relief is the reward.
No result ends the check. A clean result reads as a better cover. So the heart goes again at the next answer.
The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts. Here it is the fast heart. The window is the few seconds between that beat and the check. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement. It is enough time to ask one plain question instead.
How do I stop checking everything people tell me?
Not by deciding to trust people more. You have tried that, and the beat came back at the next answer. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.
Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Here the different action is one direct question, asked once.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Quietly, to yourself, when the heart picks up:
Heart is going. That is the check, not a fact. Not a test. I am asking directly, once.
Then ask the one plain question. Take the answer as the answer for today, and put the phone face down.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
For one week, write down each time an answer sounds like a cover.
Next to it, write what you had as evidence at that moment. Only what you saw or heard.
Each time you ask once and stop, count it. That is a full repetition.
Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. A day where you checked anyway, and named the beat after, still counts. You are filing it, not grading it.
Between moments, you can look at where this was learned, if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is also a complete answer. The practice does not need the history.
Why do I feel like I'm being lied to all the time?
Because the check never switches off. When it runs all day, every answer meets it, and every answer fails it. That is not because all of them are false. It is because the check is built so nothing passes. Notice whether the doubt comes before any evidence. If the beat arrives first and the reason after, the check is running.
Why do I feel like everyone is hiding something from me?
When the doubt reaches every room at once, it is rarely about one person. It is the same check, spread wide. Friends, family and work all get it. Look at your week before you look at them. A hard week, poor sleep or a recent letdown can turn the check up. Write down who, and what you actually saw.
Is it them, or is this a pattern running?
Some people do lie. Some are hiding something. This page does not rule on anyone in your life. Your record does that: what you saw and heard, written down, not what the beat told you.
If the feeling came on suddenly, does not let up, and reaches strangers as well as people you know, take it to a doctor. This page does not answer that question.
The pattern is different. It runs the same check in other ways. Check the rooms. Do you test a partner to see if they stay? Do you read a friend's short text as a problem? Then the doubt is the loudest part, not all of it. The file this page comes from describes the same check everywhere else.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
THE FULL FILE
This page is one room. The Testing Pattern is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

Why do I feel like everyone is lying to me?
Because a check is already running when they answer. Every answer is read as an input to the check, and the check is built so nothing passes.

What is the body signal here?
Usually a fast, hard heart while the other person is still talking. It is what you feel as the pattern starts, a few seconds before the check.
How do I know if someone is really lying?
Write down what you saw and heard, not what the beat told you. A record of facts can tell you more than a feeling can.
Why doesn't checking make me feel better?
Because a clean result reads as a better cover. No result can end a check that is built to keep you ready.
Why do I ask so many follow-up questions?
Each one brings a moment of relief, because you did something. That relief is the reward, and it keeps the questions coming.
What can I do instead of checking?
Ask one plain question, once. Take the answer as the answer for today. Then put the phone face down.
Could this be something other than a pattern?
It could. If it came on suddenly, does not let up, and reaches strangers too, take it to a doctor. This page cannot tell.
Do I need to know where this started?
No. You can look between moments if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer. The practice works without the history.
Is this a clinical claim?
No. This archive makes no clinical claims and names nothing you have. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing. Clinical questions belong with a clinician.
THE ARCHIVES
The same check runs with partners, friends and at work. If you want to know whether this is your primary pattern, the one that runs most often, the assessment names it.
