Why do I disappear on people?
Before the next quiet stretch, send one honest sentence: I am going quiet for a bit, I am not gone.
PATTERN: The Disappearing Pattern / ARENA: SELF, BODY AND HEALTH
You were there, and then you weren't. No fight, no reason anyone could point to. The messages stopped, the plans lapsed, and for a few weeks you were simply gone.
This can be The Disappearing Pattern, the sequence that goes quiet when contact asks something of you. Here it takes the whole of you offline, not one person. Needing space is not the pattern. Read the first section first, because one kind of wanting to disappear needs a person tonight, not a page.
What kind of disappearing is this?
There are two kinds, and they need different answers. One is going quiet on people for a while. You still want them. You just cannot face them this week. That is the kind this page is about.
The other is wanting to disappear from your own life. Not from a group chat. From being here at all. If that is the one you mean, it comes before anything else on this page.
If wanting to disappear has turned into not wanting to be here, say so to a person tonight. You can text if talking is too much. In the United States:
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.
Crisis Text Line. Text HOME to 741741, if a call is the part you cannot do.
You do not need to be certain it counts to use them.
What does a disappearing cycle look like?
It starts small. A reply left for tomorrow. A plan you do not confirm. Then a few days with the phone face down, and the relief of no one asking anything.
Then the return gets harder. Each day of silence seems to need a bigger reason. So the silence runs on. Weeks later you come back, often with a joke or a brief sorry. Things look normal. Then the next cycle starts.
The cycle often opens after a good stretch, not a bad one. A warm evening. A friend who said something real. A week where people needed you and you showed up.
You do not leave because you stopped caring. You leave when being there starts to cost more than you can see how to pay.
What happens in my body before I go dark?
The common report is a band around the chest when someone reaches for you. Then a pull to be somewhere no one can ask. Your own first sign may be somewhere else. Look for it.
[MECHANISM]
The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts. Here it is often the band around the chest when contact arrives.
The window is the few seconds between that signal and the first act of going quiet. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measured one.
The relief of the silence is the reward. It is why the next cycle starts sooner.
The cue, the first thing that sets it off, is usually contact that asks for presence. A call. A plan. A question about how you really are.
How do I stop disappearing on people?
Not by promising never to need space again. You will need it. The aim is to take the space with a word instead of without one. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.
Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Here the different action is one honest sentence before you go quiet.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Say it out loud when the pull to go dark arrives; write it if speech is unavailable:
Chest is tight. I want to go quiet. One honest sentence.
Then send it to the people who would notice: I am going quiet for a bit. I am not gone.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
Name the two people whose worry would cost you most. They get one honest sentence before each quiet stretch.
When you come back, keep it short: I went quiet, I am back. No long account is owed.
Count the stretches that started with a word. Each one is a full repetition.
Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. Between moments, you can look at where this was learned, if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is also a complete answer.
Why do I disappear on people?
Because going quiet ends the asking, and the ending brings relief. Contact asks you to be present and known. On some days that costs more than you have. The silence pays the bill for now and sends a bigger one later. Next time, send one honest sentence before you go, so the pause stays a pause.
Why do I want to disappear from people?
The wish usually means the asking has become too much. Every message, every plan, every kind check-in feels like a demand. Disappearing looks like the only way to make it stop. A smaller way exists. Tell one person you need a few quiet days. If the wish is about not being here at all, use the routes in the first section tonight.
Is this needing space, or is this a pattern running?
Needing space is real and allowed. It usually comes with a word: I need a week. It ends when you are rested, and coming back is easy.
The pattern is different. It comes with no word. It runs on after rest. Coming back gets harder the longer it lasts. Then check the other rooms. Does the same going-dark happen in love, with friends, at work? Then this is the shape it takes in your life as a whole. The file this page comes from describes the same sequence everywhere else.
If the flatness covers nearly every day for weeks, that is a question for a doctor. Ask it. This page does not answer it.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
THE FULL FILE
This page is one room. The Disappearing Pattern is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

Why do I disappear on people I care about?
Because caring raises the asking. Contact with people who matter asks to be known. Going quiet ends that for a while, and the relief is the reward that keeps the cycle running.
Why do I go dark for weeks and then come back?
The silence brings relief, then gets harder to break. When the cost of staying gone grows past the cost of coming back, you return. Then the cycle starts again.
Why do I want to disappear from people?
Often because the asking has become too much. Disappearing looks like the only way to stop it. One honest sentence to one person is a smaller way. If the wish is about not being here at all, use the routes in the first section.
What do I say before I go quiet?
One honest sentence: I am going quiet for a bit, I am not gone. That keeps a pause from turning into a vanishing.
What do I say when I come back?
Keep it short: I went quiet, I am back. Then pick up the actual thread. You do not need a full account first.
What is the body signal here?
Often a band around the chest when someone reaches for you. It is what you feel as the pattern starts. Your own first sign may be somewhere else.
Why does it happen after good times?
A good stretch brings people closer, and closeness raises the asking. The going-quiet often opens after warmth, not after a fight.
Is it okay to need time alone?
Yes. A needed pause is allowed. Saying it in one sentence is what keeps it a pause rather than a disappearance.
Do my friends think I do not care?
This page cannot know what they think. You can make it clearer by sending a word before you go quiet. What they do with it is theirs.
Is this a clinical condition?
This archive makes no clinical claims and names nothing you have. It describes a sequence with a body signal and a timing. If the flatness has been there most days for weeks, ask a doctor.
THE ARCHIVES
The same going-dark can run in love, with friends and at work. If you want to know whether this is your primary pattern or one covering for another, the assessment names it.
