Why does nobody ask how I am?

The next time someone asks how you are, say one true sentence before you ask anything back.

PATTERN: The Draining Bond  /  ARENA: FRIENDSHIP

You asked three people how they were. One talked for forty minutes. One cried. Nobody asked you back, and you noticed, and you said nothing about it, because what would you even say.

This is The Draining Bond in a friendship, with no single friend to point at. You know the file as the one relationship you cannot leave. It has a quieter form: the role you cannot put down, which is the listener. Count, today, how many times you answer a question with a question. That number is where this page starts.

Why does nobody ask how I am?

Start with what cannot be known. You cannot see inside anyone else. You do not know whether they forget, or assume you are fine, or never learned to ask. This archive makes no claims about them and neither should you, at least not yet.

Now take what can be known. Someone says, how are you. Watch the next second. You say fine, or good, or busy, and before the word has landed you have turned the question around. How are you, though. And they tell you, because you asked, and because you are good at it.

Over years that second becomes the shape of every friendship you have. Not because anyone decided it. Because the turn is fast, it feels like kindness, and it never once leaves a space where the asking could happen.

You are not invisible. You are very quick. The door closes before anyone has reached it, and you are the one closing it.

Is it them, or is it me?

That is a verdict question, and this page keeps a record instead. The record says: in your friendships, you hold the listening job. The job was assigned early, it was never reviewed, and it comes with a rule. Your own state is not on the agenda.

The Draining Bond is the pattern where the reasoning arrives at the same answer no matter what the numbers were. Here the reasoning sounds like this. They need it more. Mine is small. I would not know where to start. It is easier to ask. Every one of those sentences ends in the same place: the question goes back to them.

Notice that none of the sentences is about them. They are about a job you carry, and the job does not have a vacancy for the other direction. That is why the friends can change and the asymmetry stays.

What happens in my body when someone asks?

The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts, before the turn. On this file the report is a small drop in the stomach, or a tightening in the throat, the moment a real how are you lands. It feels like being put on the spot.

    [MECHANISM]

The drop arrives three to seven seconds before the question is turned around. Those seconds are the window, the few seconds before the behavior where a different action is still possible.

Being asked is exposure. The turn ends it fast and hands the floor back to the other person, which the body reads as safety.

The relief when they start talking is the reward. That relief is why the turn is quicker every year, and why it now feels like your personality.

How do I let someone ask?

Not by telling your friends to ask more. You can, and some might. But the turn can still happen in the second after they do, and then the floor is theirs again before either of you noticed. Knowing why does not change the sequence. Repeating a different action in the window does.

The three moves are the same as on any file. Catch: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept: interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Rewrite: repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns.

    [INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]

When the how are you lands and the stomach drops, quietly to yourself:

There is the drop. That is the turn loading. I am not answering with theirs.

Then say one true thing about your week before you ask anything about theirs. Say it even if it is small. Especially if it is small.

    [FIELD ASSIGNMENT]

For one week, answer every how are you with one true sentence before any question back. Not fine. Something that happened.

Pick one friend and tell them you are trying this. Not as a complaint. As a note: I turn the question around too fast and I am working on it.

Keep a count. Each true sentence that goes first is one full repetition, whatever happens after it.

A fine that slips out, followed by, actually, not fine, still counts. The repetition is the different action, not the quality of the conversation that follows it.

What is the listening costing me?

The obvious cost is being tired. The quieter cost is this. Nobody in your life has an accurate record of you. They have the version that is fine and asks good questions. When something real happens, there is no one to tell, not because they would not listen, but because they have never been shown the door.

Where the job was learned is a separate question, and you do not need the answer to work the window. Pattern Archaeology is the optional work between moments, looking back at where the pattern was learned and what it once did for you. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer.

The core file on this pattern is at /patterns/why-cant-i-leave-a-relationship-that-drains-me. It describes the same job in one relationship. This page is the same job in all of them, which is the strongest evidence it is a pattern and not the people.

    THE FULL FILE

This page is one room. The Draining Bond is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

    Questions people ask about this

Why does nobody ask how I am?

What you can see is the second after they do. You say fine and turn the question around, fast, before anything true is said. The turn is the pattern. Over years it leaves no space where asking could happen.

Why do I listen to everyone and nobody listens to me?

Because listening is a job you hold, and the job has a rule: your state is not on the agenda. The reasoning that keeps it running arrives at the same answer with every friend, which is why the friends change and the shape does not.

Why does nobody ask me questions about myself?

Partly because you do not leave a gap for it. A real question lands, the stomach drops, and the question goes back across the table inside a few seconds. It feels like manners. It is the pattern.

Is it my fault that nobody asks?

Fault is a verdict. This is a record. The record says the turn happens on your side of the table, which is the only side you can change. That is not blame. It is the location of the window.

What is the body signal on this file?

A drop in the stomach or a tightening in the throat when a real how are you lands. It arrives three to seven seconds before you turn the question around. Those seconds are where the work is.

What do I say when someone asks how I am?

One true sentence before any question back. Not fine. Something that happened this week, even if it is small. Then stop and let them respond to it.

Should I tell my friends that I feel unheard?

You can, as a note rather than a charge. I turn the question around too fast and I am working on it. That tells them what to watch for and keeps the work on your side of the table.

Why does it feel selfish to talk about myself?

Because the job was learned with a rule attached, and the rule says your state is not on the agenda. The feeling of selfishness is the rule being enforced. It is not a measurement of anything.

What do I do when I need a listener and there is nobody?

Write the thing down first, in full, so it exists somewhere outside your head. Then pick the one friend who would least mind being asked, and ask. Start with one sentence, not the whole thing.

Does this mean my friends do not care?

This page does not know your friends and will not guess. It knows the turn, and the turn happens on your side. Change that and you will have better data about them than you have now.

    THE ARCHIVES

The same job runs with family, at work and in a relationship. If you want to know whether this is your main pattern or one covering for another, the assessment names it, and it costs nothing.

The window is the gap between the first signal in your body and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure for that gap. It is drawn from what people report about their own sequences, not from a stopwatch in a laboratory. Some sequences run at the short end and some at the long, and the same person will find it varies. It is the scale you train toward after Catch. Catch is the first move: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Your body is not obliged to keep to that number.
