REFERENCE: ONE TERM
Feeling like a burden is the sense that your needs cost other people too much, so you hide them or apologize for them.
You typed the message, then deleted it. You did not want to bother anyone. Feeling like a burden is the sense that your needs are too much for the people around you, so asking for anything feels like taking.
In this archive it usually points at The Apology Loop, the pull to smooth things over and say sorry for taking up space. You feel it as a drop in the stomach just before you ask, or just after. The sorry comes out before the request does.
What it looks like
Sometimes this feeling goes further than asking for help. If it has become the thought that people would be better off without you, this page is not the priority. Talk to a person today.
In the United States:
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.
Crisis Text Line. Text HOME to 741741, if a call is the part you cannot do.
Emergency services: 911.
You are not a burden to the people who answer these. Answering is what they are there for.
You need a ride to an appointment. You spend twenty minutes wording the text. You add two apologies and an offer to pay for gas, and then you do not send it.
A friend asks how you are. You say fine, and you turn the talk back to them. Later you wonder why nobody ever asks how you really are.
You are sick in bed, and you still say sorry to the person who brings you soup.
You would help them without a second thought. You cannot picture them feeling the same about you.
Asking for help
Asking for help is where this feeling is loudest. The request forms, the stomach drops, and the request shrinks. Could you help me move becomes no worries if not.
Many people only ask once the need is urgent, because waiting felt less like a burden. By then the ask is bigger, and that seems to prove the point. It does not. It only proves the waiting.
Some people stop asking at all. They handle everything alone and call it being independent. It looks strong from outside. From inside, it is tiring and quiet.
Why the feeling is not a measurement
The feeling says your needs are too much. It does not measure anything. It fires at the same size whether you ask for a ride across town or a glass of water.
It was usually learned somewhere needs really did cost too much. Asking brought a sigh, a fight, or nothing at all. The room changed. The feeling did not get the news.
[FIELD OBSERVATION]
The sorry arrives at the same size every time. That fixed size is the clue that it is a habit, not a fact about you.
What to do when you notice it
Feel for the body as the need shows up. The stomach drop, the tight throat, the urge to delete the message. Name it to yourself: there is the sorry, coming.
Then say one short sentence out loud, even very quietly. Keep it plain.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Stomach dropped. Asking is allowed.
There is the sorry. I will ask without it.
One clear ask. They can say no.
Then take the different action instead of the usual response. Send the message with one fewer apology. Ask plainly, and let the other person decide. Their answer is theirs to give.
Count it as one rep, one time you asked without shrinking it. If you only notice after you deleted the message, name it out loud then. That still counts.

Questions people ask about this term
What does feeling like a burden mean?
It is the sense that your needs cost other people too much. So you hide them, shrink them, or say sorry for them.
What if I feel like everyone would be better off without me?
Then this is more than a habit, and it comes first. Talk to a person today. Call or text 988, text HOME to 741741, or call 911 in an emergency.
Why do I feel like a burden when I ask for help?
Because the feeling fires at the moment of asking, often as a drop in the stomach. It was usually learned somewhere asking really did cost something.
Why do I apologize for needing things?
The sorry is an attempt to make the need smaller before anyone can mind it. It comes from the habit, not from anything you did wrong.
Is feeling like a burden a diagnosis?
No. It is an everyday phrase, not a diagnosis. It describes a feeling and a habit that can be caught.
How do I ask for help without feeling like a burden?
You may feel it anyway at first. The aim is to ask while the feeling is there. Send the request with one fewer apology and let them answer.
Why does nobody ask how I am?
Often because you turn the talk back to them before they can. Try answering one true sentence about yourself next time.
What if they say no?
Then you asked, and they answered. A no is information about their day, not a verdict on your worth.
Why do I wait until things are urgent to ask?
Waiting feels like being less of a burden. But it makes the ask bigger, which seems to prove the feeling right. Asking earlier keeps it small.
Where does feeling like a burden come from?
Often from a home where needs brought a sigh, a fight or nothing. Looking into that is optional, between moments. You do not need it to ask differently today.
Which pattern is feeling like a burden?
Most often the pull to apologize and make yourself small. The assessment names which of the nine runs most for you.
