Why do I feel anxious when things are going well?
The next calm evening, when the checking starts, name the scan and change nothing tonight.
PATTERN: Success Sabotage / ARENA: SELF, BODY AND HEALTH
Everything is fine and you feel worse. Work is steady. Home is quiet. Nobody is upset with you. And your chest is tight, your mind keeps checking for the problem, and you cannot settle into any of it.
This is Success Sabotage, the pattern that brings good things back down to a level it knows. Before it makes any move, it runs a scan. The unease is that scan. Read the section on the body first. Then try the field assignment the next calm evening you have.
Why does a good stretch feel like waiting for a drop?
Because having something good means something can be taken. The pattern holds the good stretch like a loan. The only open question is when it gets called in. So the body braces, and keeps bracing, while nothing happens.
The common phrase is waiting for the other shoe to drop. It sounds light. It is not light. It is a state where you cannot enjoy the thing you have, because part of you is busy guarding it.
You are not anxious about anything. You are guarding something.
What happens in my body in a good week?
The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts. Here it is usually a restless tightening in the chest and upper stomach. Attention that will not settle. An urge to check the phone, the account, the inbox, for the thing that went wrong.
[MECHANISM]
The scan is the first step. In a good week it can run with no event attached, a charge with nowhere to go.
Left alone, the charge looks for a target. It finds a reason to change something, and the change is the first small undoing move.
Relief comes when the good thing is smaller again. That relief is the reward, and it teaches the scan to start sooner.
The window is the few seconds between the signal and the first move. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement. In a calm week the signal can last for hours. That gives you more chances, not fewer.
If the unease comes with changes in sleep, appetite or your body that you cannot explain, ask a doctor. This page does not answer that.
What do I do with the unease?
Not by talking yourself out of it. The scan is faster than reasons. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.
Catch is to feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept is to interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. The different action is to stay in the good thing, on purpose, for one minute.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Quietly, when the tightening starts:
The scan is running. Nothing is wrong. I am not lowering this.
Then put the phone down and look at one good thing in front of you for sixty seconds. Changing nothing is the move.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
On the next calm evening, notice the first moment the checking starts.
Write one line: where the tightening sits, and what it wants you to change.
Do not make the change tonight. Count the evenings you held off. Each one is a full repetition.
Rewrite is to repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. An evening where you checked everything, and named the scan afterward, still counts.
Why do I feel anxious when things are going well?
Because the level of good is higher than the level your system is set for. Above that level, an alarm starts. It is the same alarm a threat would set off. It cannot tell danger from a change it has no record of. So a fine week reads as a risky one. Name it plainly when it comes: this is unfamiliar, not unsafe.
Why do I get scared when things are going well?
The scare is about the drop, not about the good thing. If good things were taken back before, the system learned to expect it. Now it braces in advance. That is why the fear comes in the good part and not in the hard part. Hard parts are familiar. Write down the last time you felt this, and check what was actually going wrong. Often the answer is nothing.
Why do I feel anxious when something good happens?
A good event is the stretch in one moment. The offer, the kind message, the good result. The scan fires during the news, not after it, and you feel a tightening where you expected joy. Stay in the moment for sixty seconds before you reply or plan. The core file, Why do I sabotage myself when things are going well?, follows what the scan does next.
Is this a real worry, or is this a pattern running?
A real worry has an object. You can name what is wrong and what to do about it. This has no object. It searches for one, and it will settle on whatever it finds first.
Check the other rooms. Does the same tightening come when a relationship gets good, or a job starts to fit? Then the calm week is only where it is easiest to see. The file this page comes from describes the same scan everywhere else.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
THE FULL FILE
This page is one room. Success Sabotage is one of nine files in the archive and it runs in all of them, which is the fastest way to tell a pattern from a situation. The full file describes the same circuit outside this arena entirely.

Why do I get nervous when everything is going well?
Because the good stretch is above the level your system is set for. An alarm starts, and it cannot tell a threat from a change it has no record of.
Why do I feel like something bad is about to happen when life is good?
Having something good means something can be taken. The pattern braces for the drop in advance, so the good part is where the dread shows up.
Why do I keep checking for problems when nothing is wrong?
The checking is the scan. It runs with no event attached and looks for a target. Name it, put the phone down, and let it run without feeding it.
What is the body signal here?
A restless tightening in the chest and upper stomach, attention that will not settle, and an urge to check. It is what you feel as the pattern starts.
Why can I handle hard times better than good ones?
Hard times are familiar. The system knows what to do. Good times are new altitude, and new reads as risky to a system set lower.
What should I do when the unease starts?
Say: the scan is running, nothing is wrong. Then look at one good thing for sixty seconds and change nothing tonight.
Why do I want to change something when life is calm?
The charge from the scan wants somewhere to go. A change gives it a target. That change is often the first small move that brings the good thing down.
Why did I feel flat when I finally got what I wanted?
The scan can start before the feeling does and take the whole room. What should have been relief comes out as flatness. It is the pattern, not a sign you wanted the wrong thing.
Do I have to know where this started?
No. You can look between moments if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer. The practice works without the history.
Is this a clinical claim?
No. This archive makes no clinical claims and names nothing you have. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing. Clinical questions belong with a clinician.
THE ARCHIVES
The same scan fires at work, in a relationship and with your health. If you want to know whether this is your primary pattern, the assessment names it.
