LIFE STAGES AND JOBS / THE STACKS
Single parents dating again, and pulling back
Read the difference between care and pulling away first. Then try the small plan at the end.
Guarding who meets your children is care. Pulling back from every adult who gets close is a pattern.
Someone good asked you out last week. You said yes. Then you found a reason to cancel, and you have found one every time since.
Dating as a single parent is hard in plain ways: time, money, sitters. This page is about a less plain one.
Care, or pulling away
Being careful about who meets your children is sound. Many parents wait months before an introduction. That is not a pattern.
The pattern shows up much earlier. Nobody is near your children yet. Someone is only getting near you.
The Disappearing Pattern is the name for going distant just as someone gets close. You may know it by how fast the reasons appear.
Why this stage hides it
Your children give you a reason nobody can argue with. So the pattern can hide inside a real duty.
If someone left before, the pull is stronger. Closeness can feel like the first step toward the next leaving.
One thing to try
Behavioral Interception is the practice of catching an automatic pattern as it begins, intercepting its usual response, and practicing a different action until it becomes more natural.
Start with the body signal, the tight chest when their name lights up your phone. Feel it and name the pattern.
Then take a different action. Reply today, and keep one small plan. Coffee for an hour counts.
Keep your family life private for as long as you like. Just let the adult part of you stay open.
The free Crash Course, short lessons on your pattern, starts by naming it.
