Before a deployment, and the distance that starts early

Getting ready to leave takes focus. Pulling in a little can make the goodbye easier to bear for everyone.

That kind of distance has an end. You come home and, in time, you come back into the room.

The pattern is not tied to orders. It runs whenever someone gets close. A deployment just gives it a very good reason.

The Disappearing Pattern is the name for going distant as someone gets close. You may know it by the relief when a hard talk gets put off.

The tell is what happens at home, months later. If closeness still makes you go quiet, the orders were never the reason.

Behavioral Interception is the practice of catching an automatic pattern as it begins, intercepting its usual response, and practicing a different action until it becomes more natural.

Start with the body signal, the tight chest or sudden tiredness when your partner wants to talk. Feel it and name the pattern.

Then take a different action. Stay in the talk for five more minutes, and say one true thing about leaving.
