Why am I pushing him away in a new relationship?

WINDOW: THE FIRST MONTHS OF SOMETHING NEW

    CROSS-REFERENCE: TWO FILES

    WHAT THIS IS NOT

A new relationship is not a condition and nervousness in one is not a pattern. Wondering whether you like somebody is ordinary and it does not need a mechanism.

It was going well and that matters. The timing people report is remarkably consistent, and it is not measured in weeks. It is measured in how close it got.

This window is the best one in the archive for catching a sequence, because everything is happening for the first time and nothing has a history to hide behind yet.

Why the timing feels like a coincidence and is not

People describe week six, or the third month, or the weekend away. What those have in common is not the calendar. It is that something was seen: you said a true thing, or they did, or a plan was made further out than either of you had gone.

So the useful question is never what changed this week. It is what got closer just before it.

The two sequences that show up here

One withdraws. The chest band arrives when their name appears, the reply gets left, the enthusiasm cools by a measurable degree, and a sensible reason arrives afterward about timing or pace or needing space.

The other pushes. A fast, high charge, then something sharp or a plan cancelled or a question that has already been answered, and then relief when they respond and a slightly larger version six weeks later.

They can run in the same person, in sequence, which is why some people describe going cold and then picking a fight about the coldness.

What to do with it while it is small

Everything here is still cheap. Nobody has years invested, no house, no arrangements, and an interruption now costs a fraction of what it costs later.

Catch the marker, say one short sentence out loud naming it, and do the small opposite thing inside the hour. Answer the message badly rather than well. Make the plan rather than deferring it.

    What is not a pattern

Not being sure. Noticing something you do not like. Wanting more time alone than they do. Those are assessments and preferences, they vary with the week, and they do not arrive on a cue with a body signal in front of them.

The difference is timing: an assessment can be made on a quiet Sunday. A sequence arrives three to seven seconds after something got closer.

THE FILES THAT SURFACE IN THIS WINDOW

Read for the body marker rather than for the description, and read more than one before deciding. Each file carries the spoken interruption for its own sequence, which is why there is no single script on this page. All of them are free to read in full.

    • The Disappearing Pattern

The pull-back that arrives after the good weekend rather than after a row.

Why do I push people away when they get close?

    • The Testing Pattern

The push that follows the moment it started to feel safe.

Why do I test people who love me?

    Questions people ask about this

Why am I pushing him away when things are going well?

Because closeness is the cue rather than conflict. The pull-back follows the good weekend rather than a row, and the reason that arrives afterward is a description rather than a cause.

Why does it always happen around week six?

The calendar is not the variable. What those moments share is that something was seen: a true sentence, a plan made further out, a weekend that went well.

Is being nervous in a new relationship a pattern?

No. Not being sure, wanting more time alone, noticing something you do not like: those are assessments and they can be made on a quiet Sunday. A sequence arrives seconds after closeness.

What does it feel like in the body?

Either a band around the chest when their name appears, or a fast high charge before something sharp gets said. Both arrive three to seven seconds before the behavior.

Why do I go cold and then pick a fight about being cold?

Because two sequences can run in the same person in sequence. The withdrawal happens, then the push tests whether the withdrawal was noticed.

    Should I tell them?

This page has no opinion about that. What it can say is that the useful thing is not an explanation, it is answering the message badly rather than well, inside the hour.

Is it better to end it early?

Nothing here decides that. What is worth knowing is that a sequence ended by leaving is not interrupted, and it starts again with whoever is next.

Why is this window good for catching it?

Because nothing has a history to hide behind yet, everything is happening for the first time, and an interruption now costs a fraction of what it costs after years.

What if I actually just do not like him?

Then that is an assessment rather than a sequence, and it will be as true on a calm Sunday as it is after a good weekend. The timing test settles it faster than deliberation does.

Why does the reason sound so convincing?

Because it usually is true. A false reason would have been discarded years ago. The tell is the timing, not the content.

Does this mean I will do it forever?

A sequence has a marker and a gap in it, which is exactly what makes it interruptible. What is running now is the same thing that will be available to catch next month.

    Where do I start?

Watch for the marker rather than the behavior, and write one line when it arrives. Location, timing, what the thought said.

    THE ARCHIVES

If you want to know which of the two is running, the assessment names it in two minutes and costs nothing.
