Why do I feel worse since I retired?
WINDOW: AFTER RETIRING
CROSS-REFERENCE: THREE FILES
WHAT THIS IS NOT
Retiring is not a pattern and finding it harder than expected is not a fault. A large amount of what people feel in the first year is an ordinary response to the disappearance of structure.
The job was holding several things up. Not only income and not only routine: it was absorbing a sequence, giving it somewhere to go and a vocabulary that made it look like diligence.
Take the structure away and the sequence is still there with nothing in front of it. That is the narrow subject of this page.
Before anything else
The first year after retiring is quieter than anybody expects and it is a window where people are more at risk than the cheerful literature about it suggests. The routes go above the reading.
In the United States: 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, call or text 988, any hour. Emergency services, 911.
Eldercare Locator, 1-800-677-1116, a public service of the Administration for Community Living, for practical local support of almost every kind. Staffed on weekdays, by call, text or online chat.
And if the flatness is general rather than aimed and has been most days for weeks, that is a doctor's question rather than a page's, and it is worth asking rather than waiting out.
What the job was actually doing
Providing a legitimate destination for a great deal of behavior. Over-functioning read as being reliable. Never finishing read as high standards. Monitoring everybody's state read as good management.
None of those looked like a pattern for thirty years because the container made them virtues. The container is gone and the same behaviors now have nowhere to be.
Why the quiet is loud
Because most of the structures that were absorbing the day were external, and the internal ones were never built, and there is now a great deal of time in which nothing interrupts the reasoning.
People describe this as boredom and it usually is not. Boredom does not have a body signal in front of it.
What is ordinary in the first year
Losing the shape of a week. Missing being useful more than missing the work. Finding that people who were friends were colleagues. Those are structural facts about the transition rather than sequences.
This page is careful about that distinction because the first year of retirement is routinely pathologised and it does not need to be.
What is actually workable
The sequence, not the retirement. If the same over-functioning is now aimed at a family, or the same unfinished projects are now in a garage, that is the file to open and it did not change when the job stopped.
One line each time it runs, and the marker becomes visible in about a week. It is the same marker it always was.
THE FILES THAT SURFACE IN THIS WINDOW
Read for the body marker rather than for the description, and read more than one before deciding. Each file carries the spoken interruption for its own sequence, which is why there is no single script on this page. All of them are free to read in full.
- Success Sabotage
A good thing with no work in front of it, and the scan that arrives anyway.
Why do I sabotage myself when things are going well?
- The Perfectionism Trap
Time with no deadline in it, and a project that never leaves the shed.
Why can't I finish anything?
- The Draining Bond
A role that was carried for decades and did not end with the job.
Why can't I leave a relationship that is draining me?
Questions people ask about this
Why do I feel worse since I retired?
Because the job was absorbing a sequence and giving it a vocabulary that made it look like diligence. The structure is gone and the sequence is not.
Is retiring supposed to be this hard?
For a great many people, yes, in the first year. Losing the shape of a week and finding that friends were colleagues are structural facts rather than faults.
Is this depression?
This archive makes no clinical claims. If the flatness is general rather than aimed and has been most days for weeks, that is a question for a doctor and worth asking.
Why am I over-functioning at home now?
Because a behavior that had a legitimate destination for thirty years still runs and needs somewhere to go. The family is simply what is available.
Why do the projects never get finished?
Because a deadline was doing work you did not know it was doing. Without one, the point at which something becomes assessable never arrives, which is exactly what one of the nine is built to avoid.
Is boredom the problem?
Usually not. Boredom does not have a body signal in front of it, and what people describe as boredom in this window often turns out to have one.
Why did nobody warn me?
Because the transition gets discussed in terms of money and rarely in terms of what a job was holding up. That is a gap in the advice rather than in you.
Should I go back to work?
Nothing here decides that. What is worth separating is whether you miss the work or miss what the work was absorbing, because only one of those needs a job to solve it.
What is actually workable?
The sequence rather than the retirement. If the same over-functioning is now aimed at a family, that is the file, and it did not change when the job stopped.
How do I find the marker?
One written line each time the behavior runs. Location, timing, what the thought said. Most people find it inside a week, and it is the same one it always was.
Is it too late at my age?
A sequence has a marker and a gap in it at any age. Nothing in the mechanism depends on how long it has been running, only on catching it once and then again.
Where do I start?
With the file that matches what you keep doing now rather than with a theory about the career. The doing is the part with a window in it.
