Why can't I look for work after being let go?
WINDOW: AFTER BEING LET GO
CROSS-REFERENCE: THREE FILES
WHAT THIS IS NOT
Being let go is not a pattern, and needing a few weeks before you can face it is not a sequence. Redundancy is a thing that happens to people rather than a thing they are.
The applications are still not going out. Not because you cannot write them and not because there is nothing to apply for, and the third week has become the seventh.
This page is about that specific stall, which is a sequence with a marker in front of it rather than a motivation problem.
Before anything else
Losing work is one of the windows where people are most at risk, and it is also the window where they are least likely to say so, so the routes go above the reading rather than below it.
In the United States: 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, call or text 988, any hour. Crisis Text Line, text HOME to 741741. Emergency services, 911.
And the practical one, which is often the part underneath: dial 211, free and confidential, anywhere in the United States. Rent, food, utilities, benefits, legal help. Ringing it early is not an admission of anything and people routinely leave it until far too late.
What the window supplies
An application is a document that produces a verdict about you, and it produces it in writing, from strangers, in volume. There is no other activity in ordinary life with that shape.
And the bank balance is a number that can only get worse while you look. Both of those are exactly the conditions two of the nine were built to avoid.
Why the CV is the hardest part
Because it asks you to make claims. Not to describe tasks, which is easy, but to say this was mine and it went well, in a document that will be assessed by people who can dispute it.
People running one of the nine will spend six hours making a CV more accurate and less impressive, and experience it as diligence.
What is ordinary here
Needing a few weeks. Anger at how it was done. Not wanting to tell people yet. Sleeping badly. Those are responses to being let go rather than sequences, and they do not need a mechanism.
The test is what happens when you sit down to do it. An ordinary response makes the task unappealing. A sequence produces a body marker and then a redirection into something else that is also work.
What is workable this week
Send one application at the point you would normally do a further pass, and let it be worse than your best. The sending is the repetition and the quality is not the variable being trained.
And look at the number once, on a fixed day, with somebody else in the room if that helps. Looking and fixing are two separate jobs and only the first one is on the list.
THE FILES THAT SURFACE IN THIS WINDOW
Read for the body marker rather than for the description, and read more than one before deciding. Each file carries the spoken interruption for its own sequence, which is why there is no single script on this page. All of them are free to read in full.
- The Perfectionism Trap
An application that cannot be sent because sending it makes you assessable.
Why can't I finish anything?
- Success Sabotage
An interview that goes well and then goes quiet.
Why do I sabotage myself when things are going well?
- Compliment Deflection
A CV that will not describe what you actually did.
Why can't I take a compliment?
Questions people ask about this
Why can't I look for work after being let go?
Because an application is a document that produces a verdict about you in writing, from strangers, in volume. There is no other ordinary activity with that shape.
Is needing a few weeks a problem?
No. Needing time, being angry, not wanting to tell people yet: those are responses to being let go rather than sequences, and they do not need a mechanism.
How do I tell the difference?
By what happens when you sit down to do it. An ordinary response makes the task unappealing. A sequence produces a body marker and then redirects you into something else that is also work.
Why is the CV the worst part?
Because it asks you to make claims rather than describe tasks. Saying this was mine and it went well, in a document strangers can dispute, is the exact condition one of the nine exists to prevent.
Why do I make my CV less impressive?
Because reducing the claim reduces the exposure, and it feels like accuracy while you are doing it. Six hours spent making it more accurate and less impressive is the sequence rather than diligence.
Why can I not look at my bank account?
Because an unread number cannot deliver a verdict. Looking and fixing are two separate jobs, and the second one is what makes the first feel impossible.
Why did the interview that went well go quiet?
Check what you did afterward. In a great many accounts the follow-up that would have been sent is the thing that did not happen, and it is not experienced as a decision.
What should I do this week?
Send one application at the point you would normally do a further pass, and let it be worse than your best. The sending is the repetition.
Is this depression?
This archive makes no clinical claims. If the flatness is general rather than aimed at the task, and has been most days for weeks, that is a question for a doctor.
Does this mean it was my fault I was let go?
No, and nothing here says that. Redundancy is a thing that happens to people, and a sequence running now is about the looking rather than about the leaving.
Why is it worse the longer it goes on?
Because the gap itself becomes something that needs explaining, and explaining it is another claim. That is a second sequence stacking on the first.
Where do I start?
With one worse-than-best application, sent. Then a written line about what happened in your body at the point you would normally have done another pass.
THE ARCHIVES
If you want to know which sequence is doing the stalling, the assessment names it in two minutes and costs nothing.
