REFERENCE: ONE TERM
Regret is the painful wish that you had chosen differently, felt once the choice is made and the cost is clear.
Regret usually arrives after the relief leaves. At the time, the choice felt clear. You cut them off. You ended it. You said no to the thing you wanted. Then the clear feeling faded, and what was left was the cost.
Regret is the wish that you had chosen differently. This page is not going to rule on whether you were right. That is a verdict, and this is a record. It is about what regret is made of after a pattern runs, and what to do next.
What it looks like
You blocked the number and felt calm for an hour. Now you keep opening the blocked list. You ended things with someone kind because you felt nothing, and a week later you feel a great deal.
You turned down the offer for good reasons. Four hours later the reasons stopped holding, and you have been going over them since.
It felt like clarity at the time. Clarity that reverses by bedtime is worth looking at.
What the regret is made of
Look at the order. First there was relief, and it was total. Nothing to answer, nobody who could see you, no risk left on the table. The regret came only when that relief wore off.
That order matters. The regret is not proof you were wrong. It is evidence that you wanted the contact, or the chance, more than the relief let you feel at the time.
Three patterns often leave this kind of regret behind. The Disappearing Pattern is pulling away when someone gets close. You may cut people off and then miss them. Attraction to Harm is feeling the strongest pull toward people who keep you unsure. You may end things with someone steady and then wonder why. Success Sabotage is undoing things just as they start to work. You may turn down the very thing you wanted.
Doing versus not doing
A review read on this site's Myth Files looked at two kinds of regret. One is regret over something you did. The other is regret over something you did not do.
Actions brought more regret in the short term. Over the long run, the things people did not do brought more. The review read earlier work and did not test this method.
[FIELD OBSERVATION]
Holding back can feel like the safe choice in the moment.
It is worth knowing that the cost of not doing tends to show up later.
The next ten minutes
Do not undo it in a rush. A choice made in a minute and reversed in a minute is the same pattern twice. Do not send the long message tonight. Do not unblock at midnight.
Find out whether it is really closed, when you are steady. Some things can be reopened. Then write down, word for word, the reason that sounded so clear at the time. That sentence is often the most useful part of the whole thing.
What to do when you notice it
Next time, start with the body signal. That is the physical feeling that comes first, such as a sudden calm, a tight chest or a cold drop in the stomach. Name what is starting: the clean, certain feeling that says you are done.
Say one short sentence out loud, even quietly.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
This feels very clear. Clear and fast is how it always feels. I can wait one night.
Then take a different action instead of the usual response. Wait one night before you block, end or refuse. Write the reason down and read it in the morning.
Count it as one rep, one repetition of the new move. A night of waiting is a rep, even if you still decide the same thing.
The term in use
- You blocked them, felt calm for an hour, then kept checking the blocked list.
- You ended it with someone kind, and a week later you felt everything.
- The clear, certain feeling arrives, and you wait one night before deciding.
Often mixed up with
GUILT
Guilt is about harm you did to someone. Regret is about what you lost by the choice, even when nobody was harmed.
A SIGN YOU WERE WRONG
Regret shows you wanted what you gave up. It does not settle whether the choice was right.
Questions people ask about this term
What is regret?
Regret is the painful wish that you had chosen differently. It usually arrives once the choice is made and the cost is clear.
Why do I regret it now when it felt so right at the time?
At the time, relief was louder than anything else. When the relief wore off, what you gave up became visible. The regret came in that order.
Does regret mean I made the wrong choice?
Not on its own. It shows you wanted what you gave up. Whether the choice was right is a separate question, best asked when you are steady.
Should I undo it right away?
Not tonight. A choice made in a minute and reversed in a minute is the same pattern twice. Give it one night first.
Do people regret what they did or what they did not do more?
A review on this site found actions brought more regret in the short term. Over the long run, things people did not do brought more.
Why do I regret cutting someone off?
Cutting off often brings fast relief. Once the relief fades, what is left is how much they mattered. That is the regret.
Why do I regret turning down something I wanted?
The reasons may have been real, but the conclusion came first. For some people, a good thing on offer sets off a strong pull to back away.
How do I stop going over it?
Write down the reason you used, word for word. Then stop. Replaying it does not change the choice, and it makes the next moment harder to see.
Is it too late to change my mind?
Sometimes a choice can be reopened, and sometimes it cannot. Find out when you are steady, not at midnight. This page cannot tell you how it turns out.
Is regret a diagnosis?
No. Regret is a feeling, not a diagnosis. It is information about what you wanted.
How do I avoid the same regret next time?
Notice the sudden, certain feeling that comes before the choice. Name it. Then wait one night before you act on it.
