I have been a bad friend and I want to apologize

Do the next ten minutes first. They are below.

AFTER THE FACT  /  PATTERN: The Disappearing Pattern

You were not there when it counted. A hard month you did not ask about. A birthday you let pass. Messages left for days, then weeks. Now you want to say sorry, and the size of it has stopped you for a while.

This page will not rule on what kind of friend you are. That is a verdict and this is a record. Read the next ten minutes first. They are about the apology, not about you.

    The next ten minutes

Write the apology short. The long version is the one that stays in drafts. Keep it to three parts, and send it before you improve it.

    [REWRITE FRAME]

Name what you did, specifically: I went quiet when you were going through it.

Own it with no reason attached: That was mine. You did nothing to cause it.

Say what you want, with no demand in it: I am sorry. I would like to be a better friend to you, if you want that.

Leave out any account of your own bad year, and any question that needs an answer tonight.

If you are not sending it tonight, write it anyway and save it. Then the thing between you and sending is a button, not a blank page.

What being a bad friend actually was

Look at what happened rather than at the label. It is often a run of small absences. You meant to reply. You meant to call after the news. Each delay made the next message harder, because now it needed an explanation too.

Look at the timing as well. Did the quiet start after a close evening, a real talk, or a time when your friend needed more of you? Distance that opens just as a friendship deepens has a shape.

    Why you went quiet

In this archive that shape is The Disappearing Pattern, the pattern that pulls you away just as people get close. It does not fire when things go wrong. It fires when things go right, or when someone needs more of you.

It starts in the body. The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts: a heaviness when their name lights up the phone, a tight chest, an urge to leave it until later. Three to seven seconds later the phone is face down. That stretch is the window, the few seconds before the behavior. It is a working figure, not a measured one.

You did not stop caring. Caring was the part that made the message hard to send.

How do I apologize for being a bad friend?

Specifically and briefly. Name the actual moments, not your whole character. I missed your birthday and I did not ask about your dad is an apology. I am a terrible friend is a request for comfort, and it hands your friend a job. Own it, say sorry, say what you want, and stop.

Do not explain the quiet at length. A long explanation turns the apology toward you. If you are asked why, one honest sentence is enough: I pull away when things get close, and I am working on it.

    What is not yours

The response belongs to your friend. Its timing, its length and what it says are all outside this page. An apology is something you give. It is not a trade, and it does not come with a receipt.

Send it anyway. Reaching out instead of going quiet is the different action, whatever comes back. Rewrite is repeating that different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns.

What to do with the guilt

Part of the guilt is accurate. A friend went without you when it mattered. Keep that part. It is the reason to send the message.

The other part says you are a bad person and should not bother. That part is the pattern again, offering one more reason to stay quiet. Do not take its advice.

    What tonight actually is

An entry. A late one, filed after a long quiet, which is an ordinary thing a record accepts rather than a failure being reopened.

There is no shame register here. Tonight is for three short parts and a send button. The next name on the screen that brings the same heaviness is where the work goes after that.

The full file on this sequence, including the signal that opens it, is at /patterns/why-do-i-push-people-away when you want it. It will keep.

Why do I push people away when they get close?

The window is the gap between the first signal in your body and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure for that gap. It is drawn from what people report about their own sequences, not from a stopwatch in a laboratory. Some sequences run at the short end and some at the long, and the same person will find it varies. It is the scale you train toward after Catch. Catch is the first move: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Your body is not obliged to keep to that number.
