REFERENCE: ONE TERM
Self-deprecation is putting yourself down, often as a joke, by playing down your skill, looks or worth.
The joke was out before they finished. Someone turned to you, and you made yourself the punchline. Self-deprecation is the word for that. It means putting yourself down, often with a laugh, before anyone else can.
A joke at your own expense can be a good joke. It can also be a reflex that fires every time attention lands on you. In this archive that reflex usually points at Compliment Deflection, the pull to push praise away the moment it arrives. You feel it as heat in your face as the room turns to you.
What it looks like
Someone says your talk went well. You say you were shaking the whole time and nobody could hear you. They laugh. The talk is no longer the subject.
Or a photo of you goes round. Before anyone comments, you have made a joke about your hair. It lands, and the moment of being looked at is over.
The joke was not for them. It was a way out of being seen.
That is what makes it hard to spot. It looks like humor. It often is funny. But it fires on a schedule, every time the light turns your way.
Putting yourself down
Putting yourself down is the plain way to say self-deprecation. It covers the joke, the shrug and the quick no, it was nothing. It also covers the quieter version, the one you say only to yourself.
Many people believe it makes others like you. A myth page on this site checks that belief against one small study. Jokes at the speaker's own expense helped only speakers described as high in status, and only for long-term appeal. For speakers described as low in status, the same jokes did not help. So the belief is only partly true.
Where the word comes from
To deprecate something is to speak of it as worth little. Self-deprecation is doing that to yourself. The word is most often used about humor, as in a self-deprecating joke.
The word gets something right. Running yourself down can feel safe. It takes the hit before anyone else can throw it. And it can make a room laugh, which feels like being liked.
Where the word stops
It is not a diagnosis, and it is not a flaw in itself. Plenty of people choose a joke at their own expense and could just as easily not. That is a style, and it is fine.
The word cannot tell a choice from a reflex. Here is a test. Could you let one good sentence about you stand, with no joke after it? If the answer is no, and the urge comes with heat in the face, something faster than humor is running.
What to do when you notice it
Start with the body, because it moves first. When the room turns to you, notice the heat in your face or the tight throat. Name it to yourself: there is the joke, coming.
Then say one short sentence out loud. Quiet is fine.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Face is hot. I do not need the joke. Thank you.
Then take the different action instead of the usual response. Let one sentence about you stand with nothing after it. If someone praises the talk, say thank you, I worked on it. Then stop and let them keep talking.
Count that as one rep, a single repetition of doing it another way. If the joke came out anyway, notice it and name it later. That counts as well.
The term in use
- Your talk goes well, and you joke that nobody could hear you anyway.
- A photo of you is shared, and you mock your own hair first.
- Someone thanks you for helping, and you say you barely did anything.
Often mixed up with
HUMILITY
Humility sees your part clearly, good and bad. Self-deprecation shrinks the good part, often before anyone has looked.
A SENSE OF HUMOR
Humor can aim anywhere. A put-down reflex always aims at you, and always when attention arrives.
FALSE MODESTY
False modesty is a put-down made for show. Self-deprecation is the put-down itself, whether it is chosen or a reflex.
Questions people ask about this term
What does self-deprecation mean?
It means putting yourself down, often as a joke. You play down your skill, looks or worth, usually before anyone else can.
Is self-deprecating humor bad?
Not in itself. A joke you choose is fine. The cost comes when you cannot let attention land without one.
Does putting yourself down make people like you?
Only partly. A myth page on this site found that in one small study, such jokes helped only speakers seen as high in status.
Why do I always make fun of myself?
For many people, attention brings heat to the face almost at once. A joke ends that moment fast, so it becomes the go-to move.
Why do I put myself down when people compliment me?
Because the put-down moves the attention off you. Praise is being seen up close, and the joke closes that down.
Is self-deprecation a sign of low self-esteem?
Sometimes, but not always. Plenty of people who joke this way are quite sure of their skill. The joke is about the moment of being seen, not about a belief.
How do I stop putting myself down?
Notice the body first, say one short sentence, and let one good sentence about you stand. Count each time you do it.
What do I say instead of a self-deprecating joke?
Thank you, and nothing after it. Or one plain fact, like I worked hard on it. Then stop talking.
Is putting yourself down in your head the same thing?
It is the quiet version. It often runs in the same moments, right after praise or good news.
Which pattern is self-deprecation?
When it is a reflex, it is usually the pull to push praise away as it arrives. The assessment names which pattern runs most for you.
