The therapist friend

The public name for one of The Archivist Method's nine patterns already exists. The archive did not coin it. Two separate public question titles use it. One asks: why am I the therapist friend. The other answers itself: I am drained of being the therapist friend.

The person asking already carries the reason they cannot leave. Leaving would be cruel, because the friend needs them. That is not a description of the friendship. That is the pattern's cover story: the reason it gives for staying.

The archive files the same cover story in marriages, in families and in jobs. A friendship has no exit ritual. So this version of the pattern can run for years. It can run without a single event anyone can point at.
