The Archivist Method

How the method works

Behavioral Interception. The practice of catching an automatic pattern as it begins, intercepting its usual response, and practicing a different action until it becomes more natural.

01

Catch.

Feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior.

Notice your first clue, such as chest tightness, heat, or a hand reaching for the phone. Your clue may be different or arrive later. Name the pattern. A sensation alone does not prove what is happening.

02

Intercept.

Interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes.

Use a short cue to interrupt the sequence, then take the different action. Saying the words and doing the action are separate. If speaking is unavailable or unsafe, take the safe action first.

03

Rewrite.

Repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns.

Practice the action on later occasions. Count the attempts where you take it, then notice what changes. There is no fixed number of repetitions and no need to feel calm for an attempt to count.

Pattern Archaeology

Why does this keep happening?

Pattern Archaeology is a way to look at where a reaction may have been learned, what it once helped you manage, and what keeps it going now.

You look at real moments, ask what the reaction helped you get or avoid, and compare what you feared with what actually happened. What you learn can help you choose a more useful response.

You want reassurance

01 / Catch

You may feel your heart speed up or your hand reach for the phone. Notice checking activity, timing a silence, or editing a message to provoke a reaction. Having a real concern does not mean you are testing.

02 / Intercept

A clear request does not guarantee agreement. Look at how someone treats you over time, too.

Words to interrupt the pattern
Not a test. Ask directly.

This is a cue for the action, not the whole action. Change the words if needed. Never delay a safe step to complete a script.

Ask the real question once, then put the phone down.

Words to say or send

I have been feeling uncertain about where we stand. Can we talk about it?

If the urge returns while you wait, leave the test unsent. A new fact or necessary practical information may justify a genuine follow-up.

03 / Rewrite

If the urge returns during the same unanswered conversation, practice leaving the test unsent. It is not a reason to ask for reassurance again. New facts or necessary practical information can justify a genuine follow-up.

After an attempt, note the signal you noticed, the action you took, and what happened. Count actions, not days or how calm you felt. If you noticed afterward, record the earlier clue you can look for next time.

The Archivist Method

The method offers a lens, not a verdict.

What this approach focuses on

A moment you can notice

Start with a specific reaction, rather than trying to change your entire personality.

An action you can choose

Use a practical next step alongside understanding why something happens.

Practice you can return to

The same three steps apply across all nine patterns.

Understanding your history can be useful, but it is not a requirement for trying a small, safe action. Some situations also call for professional or outside support.
