Compliment Deflection

Compliment Deflection is the reflex that returns a room to normal once something good is said. The corpus holds 156 phrasings about it. Of those, 12 describe the same exit: a joke, or a change of subject.
The corpus is the collection of phrasings this report is built on. It holds the words people use about their own repeating behavior.
One note before the numbers. No number here counts searches, people, or how often anything was typed. Each one counts phrasings: the words recorded in the corpus, on public record or built from it.
According to The Archivist Method's 2026 report, its corpus holds 156 phrasings about Compliment Deflection: 59 scenes, 33 labels and 64 plain questions. Of those phrasings, 12 describe a joke or a change of subject.
A scene is a moment: a room, an hour, a thing that happened. A label is a category word a person tries on. A plain question asks why, or how to stop.
The joke is not rudeness. It is speed. Something kind lands, and the body treats it as exposure. The joke ends the moment before it can be felt.
The corpus puts the timing plainly: I laugh before I have decided to. That gap, between the kind words and the laugh, is where the pattern can be caught.
