How unpleasant a task felt was closely tied to putting it off

Read which things went with putting tasks off in this review. Then rate how unpleasant the task you are avoiding feels.

A review of 691 correlations found that disliked tasks and impulsiveness went closely with delay.

    HOW STRONG THE EVIDENCE IS

STRONG. A meta-analysis of 691 correlations. It is strong on what goes with delay, and it cannot show what causes it.

Some tasks get put off more often. This review pooled the research on which ones, and on whom.

The Research Library reads one paper at a time and says what it found in plain words. For this note we read the abstract, not the full paper.

    What the research found

Procrastination means putting off a task you meant to do. This review pooled 691 correlations from earlier studies.

A correlation is a measure of how closely two things rise and fall together. It does not say which one drives the other.

Some things went with putting tasks off strongly and steadily. How unpleasant the task was and acting on impulse were among them.

So was self-efficacy, which is how sure you feel that you can do the task.

Being careful and dutiful was on the list too. So were self-control, being easily distracted, being organized and the drive to achieve.

Three traits showed only a weak link: rebelliousness, thrill seeking and a tendency to feel upset easily.

    How strong the evidence is

A meta-analysis pools many studies, which makes it one of the stronger kinds of evidence. This one drew on 691 correlations.

But correlations show what goes together, not what causes what. The abstract names the links without giving each one's direction.

What it means for catching a pattern

The Perfectionism Trap is the pattern of not finishing what is not perfect. A stalled task is often where it shows.

This review suggests the task itself matters. A task that feels unpleasant was closely tied to being put off.

Catch is the first move. Catch means you feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior.

The body signal is what you feel in your body as the pattern starts. It might be a sinking stomach as you look at the task.

When you feel it, rate how unpleasant the task feels from one to ten. Then do the smallest part of it.

    What it does not show

This review did not test The Archivist Method. It pooled links between traits, tasks and delay, and tested no way to change them.

It does not show that any trait causes putting things off. It shows which ones went with it, and how closely.

The free Crash Course, short lessons on your pattern, starts by naming it.
