REFERENCE: ONE TERM
Procrastination is putting off a task you mean to do, even when you expect the delay to cost you later.
You meant to start it this morning. Now it is late afternoon and the task is still there. Procrastination is the word for putting off something you mean to do, even when you know the delay will cost you.
Most people do it sometimes. For some it lands on the same kind of task every time. In this archive that often points at The Perfectionism Trap, the pull to keep work unfinished so nobody can judge it. You feel it as a heavy chest or a set jaw as you open the file.
What it looks like
You sit down to start. You check one thing first. Then you tidy the desk. Then you answer messages that could have waited. The task sits open in the corner of your eye all day.
Here is the odd part. The dull jobs got done. The form went in on time. The email you did not care about went out. What stalled is the one that says something about you.
You are not avoiding work. You have been working hard all day, on everything else.
Putting things off
Putting things off is the plain way to say it. It can look like rest, but it rarely feels like rest. The task comes with you to dinner and to bed.
A myth page on this site checks the belief that it is just laziness. The paper it read found that upset people put tasks off to feel better. When they believed their mood could not change, the putting off went away. The delay was doing a job: making you feel better right now.
What the research on this site says
Two notes in this site's Research Library read reviews of the research. One pooled many studies and found that how unpleasant a task felt was closely tied to putting it off. Acting on impulse was too. These were links, not proof of cause.
The other review argues that putting off a task buys a better mood now. The cost is usually paid later, by your future self. The note grades this as an argument still waiting for direct tests.
The statistics page on procrastination read the popular numbers in their sources. It found that one widely repeated figure about students had no study behind it in the records it read.
Where the word stops
It is not a diagnosis, and it is not a verdict on your character. It names the delay. It does not name the moment before it, or why it lands where it lands.
That last part is the clue. A general trouble with tasks would stall the dull things too. If yours stalls only the work that carries a judgment, quality and effort are not the problem. Being seen is.
What to do when you notice it
Start with the body, because it moves first. As you turn away from the task, notice the heavy chest, the sinking stomach or the set jaw. Name it to yourself: there is the turn away.
Then say one short sentence out loud, even under your breath.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Chest is heavy. This is about being judged, not about the task. Five minutes.
Then take the different action instead of the usual response. Open the task and work on it for five minutes. Do the smallest part first. A bad start is still a start.
Count that as one rep, one repetition of doing it differently. If you noticed only at the end of the day, name it out loud then. That counts too.
The term in use
- You tidy the whole kitchen instead of opening the report.
- The dull form goes in early, and the piece you care about waits.
- You check one more thing first, then another, until the day is gone.
Often mixed up with
LAZINESS
Laziness avoids effort. Procrastination often comes with a lot of effort spent on everything except the one task.
PERFECTIONISM
Perfectionism names the reason you would give. Procrastination names the result, the task not done. They are often two ends of one sequence.
REST
Rest leaves you lighter. Putting things off keeps the task with you the whole time.
Questions people ask about this term
What is procrastination?
It is putting off a task you mean to do, even when you expect the delay to cost you. Most people do it sometimes.
Is procrastination just laziness?
No. A myth page on this site found that upset people put tasks off to feel better. It is closer to mood repair than to not caring.
Why do I procrastinate on things I care about?
Because those carry a judgment about you. The dull tasks carry none, so they get done. What stalls is the work that will be seen.
Is procrastination the same as perfectionism?
Not the same, but often linked. Perfectionism is the reason you would give. Procrastination is the result. They tend to be two ends of one sequence.
What makes people put things off?
A review read on this site found that how unpleasant a task felt was closely tied to delay. Acting on impulse was too.
Why does putting it off feel good at first?
One review argues the delay buys a better mood now. The cost is sent forward to later.
Is procrastination a diagnosis?
No. It is an everyday word for a common habit, not a condition.
How common is procrastination?
Common. The statistics page on this site read the popular figures in their sources and flags the ones with no study behind them.
How do I stop putting things off?
Notice the body as you turn away, say one short sentence, and open the task for five minutes. Count each time you do it.
What if I already wasted the whole day?
Name it out loud. A late catch still counts. Then do five minutes of the task, even if it is evening.
Which pattern is procrastination?
Most often the pull to keep work unfinished so nobody can judge it. The assessment names which pattern runs most for you.
