Putting things off is not just laziness

Read the verdict first. Then read what the study can and cannot tell you.

When upset people believed their mood could not change, the tendency to put things off went away.

    THE CLAIM

    “Procrastination is just laziness.”

    THE VERDICT

FALSE. Upset people put tasks off to feel better, and stopped once they thought their mood was stuck.

    THE SOURCE

Tice, Bratslavsky and Baumeister (2001). Emotional distress regulation takes precedence over impulse control: If you feel bad, do it!. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

We read the abstract. Open the paper

Putting things off can look like laziness. From the outside, and often from the inside, it looks like not caring. One paper looked at what else is going on.

This page checks the claim against that paper, read in abstract. The paper did not look at The Archivist Method.

    What people believe

Procrastination means putting off a task you mean to do. The usual belief is that it comes from not caring enough.

That belief turns each delay into a verdict on your character. If you cared more, you would just start.

    What the study did

The paper reports three experiments. Each looked at people in a bad mood and the quick urges that followed.

The key test was a belief. Some people believed their bad mood was frozen, meaning it could not change.

This page reports the third experiment, which looked at putting things off. The other two looked at other urges for a quick reward.

    What it found

When people believed their mood could not change, the tendency to put things off went away.

The authors draw a plain lesson. When people are upset, they give in to quick urges to make themselves feel better.

In other words, feeling better right now takes priority over other goals. The delay was doing a job. When the mood seemed stuck, that job was gone.

    What it does not show

The abstract does not say how the bad moods came about, or how many people took part. So this page does not either.

The paper did not measure laziness directly. It did not test The Archivist Method.

    What actually changes a pattern

If putting off is a way to feel better, the useful question changes. What feeling comes just before the delay? You can catch that moment.

Behavioral Interception is the practice of catching an automatic pattern as it begins, intercepting its usual response, and practicing a different action until it becomes more natural.

Start with the body signal, the first physical sign as you turn away from the task. Name the pattern. Then open the task for five minutes.

The free Crash Course, short lessons on your pattern, starts by naming it.
