In-laws, and the sorry for something you cannot name

Read the two reasons to say sorry first. Then ask the one question at the end.

A sorry for an offense you cannot name buys a short peace. It also teaches the family to ask again.

You said sorry without knowing what for. Your partner's mother was upset, and someone said you owed her an apology. So you gave one, to end the chill.

Marrying into a family means learning its rules late. This page is about the sorry that fills the gap.

    Two reasons to say sorry

Sometimes you did upset someone. A clear sorry for a clear thing is part of joining any family.

The other kind comes when you cannot name the thing. You say it to make the tension stop. Then there is a next time, and a bigger sorry.

The Apology Loop is the name for saying sorry to smooth things over. Often the thing is not yours. You may know it as the sorry that is never quite enough.

Why this family makes it hard

You want this to work, for your partner as much as for yourself. So peace can feel worth any price.

But a sorry for an unknown offense teaches the family one thing. When someone is upset, you will pay.

The one question to ask first

Behavioral Interception is the practice of catching an automatic pattern as it begins, intercepting its usual response, and practicing a different action until it becomes more natural.

Start with the body signal, the tight throat or hot face as the room goes cold. Feel it and name the pattern.

Then take a different action. Ask calmly what upset her, and wait for the answer. If there is a real thing, own it.

If there is no real thing, stay kind and say nothing more. Then talk with your partner before the next visit, not during it.

The free Crash Course, short lessons on your pattern, starts by naming it.
