Couples who kept breaking up and getting back together reported more problems
Read the verdict first. Then read who the studies asked, because it limits what they show.
In two college samples, on-off partners reported fewer good things and more problems. More renewals went with more problems.
THE CLAIM
“If you keep breaking up and getting back together, it means you are meant to be.”
THE VERDICT
FALSE. On-off couples reported fewer good things and more problems. More returns went with more problems.

We read the abstract. Open the paper
Some couples break up and come back. Each return can feel like a sign it was meant to be.
This page checks the claim against one paper, read in abstract. It did not look at The Archivist Method.
What people believe
The idea is that a bond this strong keeps pulling you back. If you always return, it must be right.
So the breakups start to feel like part of the story.
What the studies did
The paper reports two studies of college students in the U.S. The first had 445 people and the second had 236.
An on-off relationship is one that ends and then starts again. The first study used open questions about people's relationships.
The second study used measures that give numbers.
What they found
Almost two thirds of the first group had been in an on-off relationship.
On-off partners were less likely to report good things, like love and understanding from a partner.
They were more likely to report problems, like trouble talking and not knowing where they stood.
The second study found the same. More returns went with more problems and fewer good things.
What they do not show
Everyone was a college student in a dating relationship. These are links, not causes.
The abstract does not say why couples return. The studies did not test The Archivist Method.
What actually changes a pattern
Attraction to Harm is when you feel pulled toward what is familiar, even when it costs you. The return can feel like fate.
Behavioral Interception is the practice of catching an automatic pattern as it begins, intercepting its usual response, and practicing a different action until it becomes more natural.
Start with the body signal, like a lift in your chest when their name appears. Catch it and name the pattern. Then wait a day before you reply.
The free Crash Course, short lessons on your pattern, starts by naming it.
