BEHAVIORAL INTERCEPTION, IN DEPTH / THE STACKS
Attraction to Harm, worked through one situation
You can read the situation first, then follow it through three moves.
In Attraction to Harm, the pull reports that something is familiar, not that it is good.
A kind date, and you feel nothing. This page walks that moment through, one step at a time.
Attraction to Harm is when you feel pulled toward what is familiar. You read the pull as chemistry. This is a worked example of Behavioral Interception, the practice of catching a pattern as it starts. The Archivist Method keeps a record of the words people use about their own repeating behavior. This example is built from that record.
Before anything else
If someone is hurting you, controlling you, or you are afraid of them, this page can wait. Talk to a person first.
The National Domestic Violence Hotline. Call 1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788. Confidential, around the clock, and they talk about safety planning as well as leaving.
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.
Emergency services: 911.
You do not need a name for the pattern to ask for help. You only need to call or text.
This example is about the pull itself, on an ordinary evening. It is not about staying anywhere you are in danger.
The situation
One recorded line reads “I felt nothing on a date with someone kind”. The evening was easy. They listened. They asked a second question. It felt flat.
Later that night, a different message arrives. It is from someone who replies rarely and never quite commits. The record has this too: “why does my stomach flip when they finally text back”.
The contrast is the point. Calm reads as nothing. Uncertain reads as alive.
Catch: the lift in the chest
Catch is the first move. The canon says it plainly: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior.
A body signal is the first thing you feel in your body when a pattern starts. In this pattern, the usual first sign is a lift or a charge in the chest. The reasons to reply come after it.
One line in the record describes it well: “heat in my chest and a forward lean”.
So the catch is small. The name lights up the screen and the chest lifts. You notice the lift. You name it: this is the pull.
Intercept: one question before you reply
Intercept is the second move. Its canon reads: interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes.
Here the usual response is the fast reply, and the evening rearranged around it. The different action is to wait, and ask one question first.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Say it quietly, out loud: Chest lifted. That is recognition, not chemistry. I am not moving toward this yet.
Then ask yourself: does this feel exciting, or does it feel like home?
That spoken line is a circuit break, a short sentence said out loud that stops the sequence. You can still reply later. The point is that the lift does not choose for you.
Rewrite: the second date
Rewrite is the third move. Its canon reads: repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns.
Here there are two actions to repeat. One is the pause before the fast reply. The other is saying yes to a second calm evening, even when the first felt flat.
Each time you do either, that is one rep. A rep is one round of catching, interrupting and taking the different action. The record names the aim: “how to tell chemistry from familiarity”.
If you catch it late
Say you notice after you have replied, and the evening is gone. That still counts. A late catch is still a rep.
Name what happened, plainly, with no verdict on yourself. The chest lifted and I followed it. Next time I ask the question first.
Between moments, if you want it
Pattern Archaeology is optional work you can do on a calm day. Its canon reads: between moments, investigate where the pattern was learned, what it once accomplished, and what still keeps it running.
You never do it while the chest is lifting. Nothing waits on it. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer.
What to try this week
Write the question on your phone: exciting, or home? Read it before any reply to the person who makes your chest lift.
If a calm person asks to meet again, say yes once more. Notice what the second evening feels like. Count each pause and each yes as a rep.
FROM THE RECORD
A typed title is a real public title, recorded as written. A corpus phrasing was built from confirmed public titles by the report's method, so it is not one person's words. Neither is a count of searches.
- “I felt nothing on a date with someone kind” (corpus phrasing)
- “why does my stomach flip when they finally text back” (corpus phrasing)
- “heat in my chest and a forward lean” (corpus phrasing)
- “how to tell chemistry from familiarity” (corpus phrasing)
The free Crash Course, short lessons on your pattern, starts by naming it.
