Honest talk went better than people expected

Read the verdict first. Then read what people feared, and what happened when they spoke plainly.

People expected honesty to hurt. It did less harm, and felt better, than they predicted.

    THE CLAIM

“Being honest will hurt the relationship.”

    THE VERDICT

FALSE. People expected honesty to hurt. It did less harm, and felt better, than they predicted.

    THE SOURCE

Levine and Cohen (2018). You can handle the truth: Mispredicting the consequences of honest communication.. Journal of Experimental Psychology: General.

We read the abstract. Open the paper

Most people value honesty yet avoid it. They fear the truth will cost them the relationship.

This page checks that fear against one paper, read in abstract. It did not look at The Archivist Method.

    What people believe

The idea is that a plain truth will hurt the other person. A small cover-up keeps things smooth.

    What the studies did

In the first studies, people were asked to be fully honest with everyone for three days. Others were asked to be kind instead.

In later lab studies, people had one honest talk they would usually avoid. Some shared something personal. Some gave hard feedback.

    What they found

Being honest felt better than people expected. It felt more connecting, and it did less harm to the relationship.

The reason was a wrong guess about the other person. People thought others would react far worse than they did.

    What they do not show

The abstract does not say honesty is always safe. The lab talks were set up by the researchers.

The studies did not test The Archivist Method.

    What actually changes a pattern

The Apology Loop is when a sorry comes out before you know what you did. It often stands in for the plain thing you meant to say.

Behavioral Interception is the practice of catching an automatic pattern as it begins, intercepting its usual response, and practicing a different action until it becomes more natural.

Start with the body signal, like a drop in your stomach before you speak. Catch it and name the pattern. Then say the true sentence, kindly.

The free Crash Course, short lessons on your pattern, starts by naming it.
