Talking to a stranger on the train felt better than staying quiet

Read the verdict first. Then read why people guessed the opposite.

Commuters who talked to a stranger had a better ride. Others guessed quiet would be better.

    THE CLAIM

“People would rather be left alone than talk to a stranger.”

    THE VERDICT

FALSE. Commuters who talked to a stranger had a better ride. Others guessed the opposite.

    THE SOURCE

Epley and Schroeder (2014). Mistakenly seeking solitude.. Journal of Experimental Psychology: General.

We read the abstract. Open the paper

Most people ride beside strangers in silence. They assume the other person wants it that way.

This page checks that guess against one paper, read in abstract. It did not look at The Archivist Method.

    What people believe

The idea is that time alone is the better ride. Talking would bother the other person and wear you out.

    What the experiments did

Commuters on trains and buses were split into three groups. One talked to a stranger, one stayed quiet, one rode as usual.

Other commuters were asked to guess which ride would feel best.

    What they found

The ones who talked had a better ride. It was no less productive.

The guessers expected the opposite. They thought quiet would feel best.

Part of the reason was a wrong guess about the other person. People thought strangers were less interested in talking than they were.

    What they do not show

The abstract does not say every stranger wants to talk. Some people on a train do want quiet.

The experiments did not test The Archivist Method.

    What actually changes a pattern

The Disappearing Pattern is when you go quiet as someone gets close. The guess that others want space can feed it.

Behavioral Interception is the practice of catching an automatic pattern as it begins, intercepting its usual response, and practicing a different action until it becomes more natural.

Start with the body signal, like a tight chest as you decide to stay quiet. Catch it and name the pattern. Then say one small thing.

The free Crash Course, short lessons on your pattern, starts by naming it.
