Personality traits shifted over months of structured work
Read what 207 studies found about traits and change. Then pick one moment this week to do one thing differently.
Across 207 studies, measured personality traits changed during structured programs, and the changes lasted.

HOW STRONG THE EVIDENCE IS
STRONG. A meta-analysis of 207 studies. Most of the programs it covered were clinical, not self-directed.
“Interventions were associated with marked changes in personality trait measures over an average time of 24 weeks (e.g., d = .37).”
Many people believe personality is fixed forever. This review pooled studies that measured it before and after.
The Research Library reads one paper at a time and says what it found in plain words. For this note we read the abstract, not the full paper.
What the research found
The authors found 207 studies that measured personality traits during structured programs of change.
Traits changed a marked amount, over 24 weeks on average. In the paper's own units, one example size was 0.37.
The change showed up in random trials and in simpler designs. It showed up in programs that were not clinical too. It lasted in later follow-ups.
Emotional steadiness changed the most, then how outgoing people were. The kind of program did not strongly predict how much people changed.
How strong the evidence is
This pools 207 studies, so it is strong evidence that measured traits can move.
Most programs were clinical ones, not self-directed practice. The results reach this method only at a distance.
What it means for catching a pattern
The Testing Pattern is when you push someone to find out whether they will stay. You may think it is simply who you are.
This review suggests who you are is less fixed than it feels. Traits moved over months, not in a single day.
A pattern is smaller than a trait. It shows up in a moment you can catch.
Behavioral Interception is the practice of catching an automatic pattern as it begins, intercepting its usual response, and practicing a different action until it becomes more natural.
What it does not show
This review did not test The Archivist Method. The Archivist Method is not therapy, and it was not among the programs studied.
It does not say how much any one person will change. It reports averages across many studies.
The free Crash Course, short lessons on your pattern, starts by naming it.
