People can change, even in their traits

Read the verdict first. Then read what the review can and cannot tell you.

In 207 studies, personality trait scores changed during intervention programs, and the changes held at follow-up.

    THE CLAIM

“People cannot really change who they are.”

    THE VERDICT

FALSE. Across 207 studies, measured personality traits shifted during intervention programs, over 24 weeks on average.

    THE SOURCE

Roberts, Luo, Briley, Chow, Su and Hill (2017). A systematic review of personality trait change through intervention. Psychological Bulletin.

We read the abstract. Open the paper

People think personality is set for life. If that were true, a pattern would be a life sentence. One large review checked.

This page checks the claim against that review, read in abstract. The review did not look at The Archivist Method.

    What people believe

The idea is that who you are is fixed. You can act differently for a while, but you drift back.

That belief can stop a change before it starts. Why try, if nothing moves?

    What the review did

This review pooled 207 studies. Each tracked trait scores during an intervention. Here that means a structured program meant to help people change.

The review focused mainly on clinical programs, not self-directed practice. Some studies were true experiments. Others measured people before and after.

    What it found

Trait scores changed markedly, over an average of 24 weeks. The abstract gives an effect size of .37 as an example.

The changes showed up in experiments and in other designs. They showed up in programs that were not clinical too. And they lasted in follow-ups after the programs ended.

Emotional stability changed the most, then extraversion. The type of therapy used was not strongly tied to how much people changed.

    What it does not show

This review measured trait scores, not specific habits or patterns. It did not look at practice done on your own.

The Archivist Method is not therapy, and it was not studied here. The review did not test it.

    What actually changes a pattern

Change is possible, and it does not come from insight alone. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does. And that starts when you catch the moment.

Behavioral Interception is the practice of catching an automatic pattern as it begins, intercepting its usual response, and practicing a different action until it becomes more natural.

Start with the body signal, the first physical sign in your chest, throat or jaw. Feel it and name the pattern. Then do one thing differently, and do it again next time.

The free Crash Course, short lessons on your pattern, starts by naming it.
