Similarity, not difference, goes with attraction

Read the verdict first. Then read what the review can and cannot tell you.

Across 313 studies, feeling similar to someone went with liking them, including in existing relationships.

    THE CLAIM

    “Opposites attract.”

    THE VERDICT

FALSE. Across 313 studies, similarity went with attraction, and the authors call the links large.

    THE SOURCE

Montoya, Horton and Kirchner (2008). Is actual similarity necessary for attraction? A meta-analysis of actual and perceived similarity. Journal of Social and Personal Relationships.

We read the abstract. Open the paper

People say that opposites attract each other. It can explain a strong pull toward someone very unlike you. One review checked what draws people together.

This page checks the claim against that review, read in abstract. The review did not look at The Archivist Method.

    What people believe

The idea is that difference sparks attraction. The quiet one falls for the loud one. The planner falls for the wild one.

It makes a strong pull feel like fate. If the person is nothing like you, that seems to be the point.

    What the review did

This was a meta-analysis. That means the authors pooled the results of many earlier studies into one picture.

They pooled 313 studies, some in labs and some in the real world. Each one looked at similarity and attraction.

They looked at two kinds of similarity. Actual similarity is how alike two people really are. Perceived similarity is how alike they feel.

    What it found

Both kinds of similarity went with attraction. The authors call both links significant and large.

Being alike mattered most between people who had not met, or had only just met. In existing relationships, its link was not significant.

Feeling alike held up everywhere the review looked, including in existing relationships.

    What it does not show

The abstract does not report any finding that difference draws people in. So this page does not claim one.

The review reports links between similarity and attraction. It did not test The Archivist Method.

    What actually changes a pattern

When the pull keeps landing on the same kind of person, it may be a pattern. The saying can hide that.

Attraction to Harm is when you feel pulled toward what is familiar. You read the pull as chemistry.

Behavioral Interception is the practice of catching an automatic pattern as it begins, intercepting its usual response, and practicing a different action until it becomes more natural.

Start with the body signal, the first physical sign, like a lift in your chest. Catch it and name the pattern. Then wait before you reply.

The free Crash Course, short lessons on your pattern, starts by naming it.
