BEHAVIORAL INTERCEPTION, IN DEPTH / THE STACKS
The Testing Pattern, worked through one situation
You can read the situation first, then follow it through three moves.
In The Testing Pattern, the true question is asked sideways, and no answer settles it for long.
The reply is late, and it matters. This page walks that moment through, one step at a time.
The Testing Pattern is when you push someone to find out whether they will stay. This is a worked example of Behavioral Interception, the practice of catching a pattern as it starts. The Archivist Method keeps a record of the words people use about their own repeating behavior. This example is built from that record.
The situation
You send a message to someone you care about. An hour passes. Then two. The dots appear and vanish.
The record holds this line: “my heart changes when the typing stops”. It also holds what comes next: “I went quiet to see if they would notice”.
The test feels like a question. Do they care? But a test that passes does not close it. One recorded line says “I tested them and they passed and it changed nothing”.
Catch: the racing heart
Catch is the first move. The canon says it plainly: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior.
A body signal is the first thing you feel in your body when a pattern starts. In this pattern, the usual first sign is a fast heart. It comes before the sharp message, and before the silence.
The record says “my chest goes hard and fast when they take too long to reply”.
So the catch is small. The typing stops and your heart speeds up. You notice it. You name it: this is the test starting.
Intercept: ask the real question
Intercept is the second move. Its canon reads: interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes.
Here the usual response is the test. You go silent, or you send something sharp and watch. The different action is to ask the real question directly.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Say it quietly, out loud: Heart is going. The lever is right there. I am not pulling it.
Then say the true thing, when you are ready: I got scared when you went quiet. Are we okay?
That spoken line is a circuit break, a short sentence said out loud that stops the sequence. You can also say the sharp thing silently first. Then say the line out loud.
Rewrite: the next late reply
Rewrite is the third move. Its canon reads: repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns.
Late replies are common. That makes this pattern easy to practice. Each time you ask directly instead of testing, that is one rep. A rep is one round of catching, interrupting and taking the different action.
The record asks for this exact skill: “how to ask for reassurance without a test”. The direct question is the answer to that line.
If you catch it late
Say you notice after the silence has run for a day. That still counts. A late catch is still a rep.
End the test out loud. I went quiet to see if you would chase me. That was not fair. I would rather just ask.
Between moments, if you want it
Pattern Archaeology is optional work you can do on a calm day. Its canon reads: between moments, investigate where the pattern was learned, what it once accomplished, and what still keeps it running.
You never do it while the heart is racing. Nothing waits on it. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer.
What to try this week
Write the direct question now, while you are calm. Keep it in your notes. When the heart speeds up, the words are already there.
Say the short line, then send the question. Count each one as a rep, even the clumsy ones.
FROM THE RECORD
A typed title is a real public title, recorded as written. A corpus phrasing was built from confirmed public titles by the report's method, so it is not one person's words. Neither is a count of searches.
- “my heart changes when the typing stops” (corpus phrasing)
- “I went quiet to see if they would notice” (corpus phrasing)
- “I tested them and they passed and it changed nothing” (corpus phrasing)
- “my chest goes hard and fast when they take too long to reply” (corpus phrasing)
- “how to ask for reassurance without a test” (corpus phrasing)
The free Crash Course, short lessons on your pattern, starts by naming it.
