BEHAVIORAL INTERCEPTION, IN DEPTH / THE STACKS
The Disappearing Pattern, worked through one situation
You can read the situation first, then follow it through three moves you can try this week.
In The Disappearing Pattern, the work starts at the tight chest, not at the reason.
A week goes well, then you vanish. That is the situation this page walks through, one step at a time.
The Disappearing Pattern is when you pull away as closeness grows. Wanted contact goes quiet, with no word. This is a worked example of Behavioral Interception, the practice of catching a pattern as it starts. The Archivist Method keeps a record of the words people use about their own repeating behavior. This example is built from that record.
The situation
One recorded line reads “we had the best week and I went quiet on Monday”. Nothing went wrong. The week was good, and that is the point.
A warm message comes in on Sunday night. It asks for a plan. You mean to answer. The reply sits unwritten, and by Monday you have gone quiet.
Another line in the record reads “I stopped replying for no reason”. A reason usually shows up later, and it sounds sensible. It rarely shows up before the silence.
A needed pause is not this pattern. Neither is keeping away from someone who frightens you. This page is about silence you did not want.
Catch: the tight chest
Catch is the first move. The canon says it plainly: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior.
A body signal is the first thing you feel in your body when a pattern starts. In this pattern, a band around the chest is one common first sign. Some people notice a held breath instead. Use the one you actually feel.
The record holds this line: “tight chest before I pull away”. It also holds this one: “my body says leave before my head does”.
So the catch is small. The message lands and the chest tightens. You notice it, and you name it. This is the pattern that goes quiet.
Intercept: one honest sentence
Intercept is the second move. Its canon reads: interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes.
Here the usual response is silence. The different action is one honest sentence, sent now, while you still can.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Say it quietly, out loud: Chest is tight. I want to go quiet. One honest sentence.
Then send it. It can be this plain: I care about this, and I need a day before I answer.
That spoken line is a circuit break, a short sentence said out loud that stops the sequence. It is not a promise. It is not an explanation. It keeps contact open without a speech.
Rewrite: the next good week
Rewrite is the third move. Its canon reads: repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns.
The next good week is where this happens. Another warm message, another tight chest, another honest sentence. Each time you send it, that is one rep. A rep is one round of catching, interrupting and taking the different action.
The record asks the question directly: “how do I stay when I want to run”. This is one answer. You stay by one sentence, then by the next one.
If you catch it late
Say you notice on Wednesday, three days into the silence. That still counts. A late catch is still a rep.
Send the honest sentence then. Keep it short and true. I went quiet, and I did not mean to. I would still like that plan.
Between moments, if you want it
Pattern Archaeology is optional work you can do on a calm day. Its canon reads: between moments, investigate where the pattern was learned, what it once accomplished, and what still keeps it running.
You never do it while the chest is tight. Nothing waits on it. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer.
What to try this week
Write down the first thing your body does when a warm message arrives. Write one honest sentence you could send. Keep both on your phone.
When the chest tightens, say the short line and send the sentence. Then note it. That note is your count of reps.
FROM THE RECORD
A typed title is a real public title, recorded as written. A corpus phrasing was built from confirmed public titles by the report's method, so it is not one person's words. Neither is a count of searches.
- “we had the best week and I went quiet on Monday” (corpus phrasing)
- “I stopped replying for no reason” (corpus phrasing)
- “tight chest before I pull away” (corpus phrasing)
- “my body says leave before my head does” (corpus phrasing)
- “how do I stay when I want to run” (corpus phrasing)
The free Crash Course, short lessons on your pattern, starts by naming it.
